So, what do ye Boardies think of the painted pandas placed throughout the District?

Lame.

Public art is a great idea, but this one is overdone.  It's a takeoff on Chicago's Cows on Parade and, worse yet, a second generation takeoff considering the District did the Party Animals series a year or two ago.

 Come up with something original.

I am completely gaga over the pandas (for want of a better phrase!).  I LOVE them!  My mission is to now be photographed with all of them.  I alter my walk routes to try to locate new pandas.

There is even a panda *inside* the "mall" of 2000 Penn (near Tower Records).  He is covered in (tin?) plating with copper wire over him.

Yesterday while out, we drove past so many new pandas (ones I'd not yet seen).  I was in heaven!  They are so cute!  So adorable!   :)

(Don't commit me [yet] - I just love creatures).   :)    They should make these pandas into stuffed toys - I would buy them!

P.S.  There are 2 pandas that I am not fond of, though.  One is at the corner of Connecticut Avenue and N Street, right outside of California Pizza Kitchen.  This panda is texturized and supposed to look like Tarzan (I think).  He has very big hands and feet and is brown-ish.  The other panda I don't like the most is at the corner of 17th and I Streets.  He is dressed in frayed denim, is quite fat, and on his t-shirt it reads "I {heart} D.C."  Basically, as a friend put it, he looks like a typical American.   :(    Ack.

P.P.S.  To be honest, though, if they really want to represent D.C. fauna, they should have giant painted rats placed throughout the city.  That's more indicative of the "wildlife" around here ...

 Cheers

 DJ Medusa.

Agreed.  But that doesn't make it art.

I have to agree with the critics on the art side-- this isn't art, and to call it that is miseducating people.  The fact that it's funded as "art" means that actual art isn't funded, which is not so cool.

But as street decorations and some good eye candy, they're fine, who cares?

Yeah...I think the writer comes off a little crusty, but there are some good points made in the article that are kind of in line with GGWs comments, with which I can tend to agree, but not strongly...

Some I think are cuter than others that are just kind of poorly executed...I think the idea is a little played out in and of itself..but some are very cute (I like the matador at Calvert and Connecticut)

DC just insn't really a serious art town

I think they are a great idea and they should do something like this with a different animal every two years. Medusa, your post was awesome, sounds like your having fun with this stuff. I like the picture idea. I'm wondering how many different one's there actually are.

Doesn't the fact that they have generated discussion, in fact....qualify them as art?
