Reason #4,000,009 why I love the 9:30

Thanks for allowing some of the folks who arrived early for the Ryan Adams show into the Backbar to pass the time! My friends and I had a great time sitting at the bar.   :D

It was really great. The band played 5 or 6 new, unreleased songs at the beginning, then went into songs from Cold Roses. The second set included more stuff from CR as well as songs from his other albums. RA singing "Dear Chicago" to the woman who requested the song on stage was a highlight. Being a fangirl, I love stuff like that.  :D

While in the Backbar, I talked with a woman who attended Friday's Philly show and said it was pretty bad. RA even mentioned how bad it was on stage last night. There seemed to be a good number of folks who attended the Philly show in the crowd given the reaction to his comments.

I almost went to the Philly show to try and get the bad taste out of my mouth from Pittsburgh. So glad I didn't - I would have given up on the kid.

I've never seen a show like the Pitt gig. When it was good - it was transcendental. When it was bad it painfully difficult to watch: he was crawling around the stage at one point looking for his glasses - often yelling @ his band & the crowd - LONG stoppages to correct the sound.

I think he's making a HUGE mistake during the tour by playing a bunch of as yet unreleased songs early...ESPECIALLY since he just dropped a new double record 2 weeks ago. He often loses crowds early with the extra new stuff & then shows just decline from there.

Glad to hear that DC was cool tho. Excellent second set:

from the ryanadams.org discussion board:

Ryan Adams Walks Off Stage in Philly

it truly was insane. 90% loved him, but the 10% who 'don't' bother him so bad that the composure really does comes undone. as he called an end to it...he spit at the crowd and slammed his guitar then pouring the remainder of his alcohol on it.

earlier a savage calls him an asshole from way in the back, ryan feels the need to address him and get into it, labeling the idiot as 'dickface'. (funny, actually real funny...but similar to athletes jeering at their inevitable hecklers, just ignore the morons..why they pay to see Ry is unknown to all of us...but they do ....."summer of 69" shouting is just un friggin real and becoming unexplainable as morons continue to pay and attend to heckle.)

The crowd really wasn't that bad... it's just not a quiet venue, more like a warehouse for storage...but they make a fortune cramming the weekly drunken philly heads in.

it's really a shame and i feel sad about the turn of events.
Ryan played a remarkable first set (which by itself, could have been the complete show and all leave happy... 3 more gems and he could call it a night and go out way on top)
but he takes a break and when he comes back, he is on a different level then the beer guzzling philly crowd.(hmm)
the sad part is, at this point Ryan was ready to pour his heart out and give the crowd an awesome acoustic personal performance. No fault to him, the crowded venue just couldn't support the intimate sound (not the people, the venue itself)
SO People talk right over beauty and Ryan gets real pissed. Tells all the f*ckheads to go to the bar instead of this music venue. "what the f*ck is your problem, you are treating this place like a bar. Are you trying to get laid?? because i can tell you that you have no chance of this you bowling shirt wearing Bud drinkers.(he went on with this for a bit mocking beer commercials quite humorously " this is what you sound like Wasssupp and whatnot, BUUUDDDD ") I was trying to do something I was feeling and this is what i get? Fine, it's not your fault, it's mine. I'll give you what you want because i am here to entertain you" .....from here he returns with the band and plays with an attitude a over loud electric guitar.
the rest is now history, and i did feel a bit hurt as he spit and walked off. 90% of this crowd loved him more then he will ever know.
It sux because I know that he really had intentions of finishing this show with something truly from the heart....
almost one of those special nights but it didn't work out. On goes the saga of an artist who is blessed with a songwriting ability currently unmatched in Generation X, but unbelievably willows to the minority of haters.

I love him no matter what, and just continue to cross my fingers that his genius can live for many a day to come (i'm sure others are concerned as well that this may not be the likely path)

sad to leave on the note i did...
still sticking with the kid for the nerves he strikes in me.....

Mostly a lurker, but i appreciate the good peeps of the ORG and wish all the best to each of you....

lots of jibber i have written,...so in closing ...please continue to rock out with the c*ck out, yes and hang out with the wang out....ladies, ignore this behavior or encourage it, your choice ....all good in the hood....

Thanks for posting the set list...yeah, the version of "To Be Young..." was awesome, especially when they went mic-less on the "Oh the days the rain..." section of the song. When the song ended, I turned to my friend and said, "That paid for the ticket." That and "Sweet Carolina" were probably the quietest moments I've experienced at the club.

The club was even more quiet last year during "Wonderwall".
Most excellent show on Saturday. I'm still elated.(man it was hot in there - crank the a/c this summer please!)
