I'm from toronto originally, so this is what I've got for you (copied from an email I sent to Kurosawa when she went up for the Coopers show.

just off the top of my head...

College Street - it's a great place to walk around in the evening...you've got latin places and the best diner ever (Mars) just east of Bathurst (my old neigborhood) and hipster haunts to the west (especially El Diplomatico...a great place for a pint outside, should weather permit).  Plus there's a good record store a few more blocks to the west (called Sound-something... you'll see it on the north side of the street) and a great used book store just opposite.  Then, go a little further and you're in a part of Little Italy (with a few lebanese places thrown in for good measure).  And my favorite bar in the city, the Red Room (no relation...) is on Spadina at College.  Really funky place with good tunes and a nice crowd.

If you're not on College, then you'll probably want to be on either Bloor or Queen West.  Bloor goes on forever, and encompasses a ridiculous variety of neighborhoods (Little Korea, Japantown, and the Bloor West Village).  There are a bunch of good places to eat (Aida's Falafel, the Nataraj - GREAT Indian, Country Style - old school Hungarian, and two equally good Japanese places who's names are interchangeably forgettable...)

Queen St West is a little more Soho ish...there are a bunch of good new and used CD and record stores (Penguin, Rotate This, Neurotica, etc) and, of course, more good places to eat and drink.  Plus, further down Queen (around Ossington) are a bunch of cool little independent galleries.

In the East end, the Danforth is sort of the big Greek neighborhood and it's always nice to walk around.  Astoria is the best place for souvlaki.

And if the weather's any good, the ferries are down at Queen's Quay to take you over to the Islands - always fun.

Oh, and there's a great photography exhibit on at the AGO now.

 Have a blast...eh?

excellent! thanks for the tips! any suggestions for theatre? toying between a big musical or a smaller drama. though the lure of seeing hairspray for nearly half the price of a ticket in new york is really tempting. btw, how is public transport? we're staying right near university of toronto, the southeast end of it.

toronto is very nice.
i'll be there this week.  i'm seeing kraftwerk there on friday.  i've not really done the sightseeing stuff there before. i'm not really into the touristy-stuff.  i just know it costs money to go up the CN tower.

funny, we were seeing if we could pull off both damien rice/frames and kraftwerk but then decided the set times would coincide with each other!

Transport's great.  The subway isn't as extensive as dc but it's well layed out and the streetcars get you pretty much everywhere else you'd want to go. And streetcars are intrinsically cool.

If you're at the southern tip of the campus (I went to school there for 2 years, so that's why I'm spouting off) go south on Spadina to Kensington Market and Chinatown.  Kensington is great.  I spent many a weekend day rummaging through random thrift stores and buying smartie cookies at My Market bakery.

The music store on College is Soundscapes.  It was ok, but price-wise you're not really saving any money by buying music/books up there versus here.  She Said Boom (on College - probably only a couple of blocks from where you'll be) is another good record/book/cd store.  There's another one on Roncesvalles in the west end which is the old Polish neighborhood.

And Mars truly is the best diner ever.  If it's crowded, don't give up and go to Kos Diner next door, though.  It's just not the same.

Yeah, I'll second Kensington Market - it's a combination yard-sale/thrifting mecca/latin quarter.  Great place to walk and browse...and drink delicious shots of espresso from that funky place on the corner.

Oh and Pho Hung on Spadina = top vietnamese.
