The Tyde

Anybody familiar with this band? They will be at Velvet Lounge 7/28

The Tyde may share three bandmembers â?? Chris Gunst, Dave Scher, and Brent Rademaker â?? with modern L.A. canyon rock band Beachwood Sparks, but where the latter sound like what a cryogenically-frozen Buffalo Springfield circa 1967 might sound like if they were thawed out today, the Tyde have drawn comparisons to a wider range of bands, many of them British in origin, including '80s and early '90s bands like Felt and Lloyd Cole & the Commotions (lead vocalist/guitarist Darren Rademaker's dusky, laconic vocals do sound a bit like Cole's romantically throaty warble). The Tyde formed in 1998, a year after the breakup of Darren and Brent Rademaker's previous band, Further, a formidable L.A.-based outfit who were influenced by U.K. shoegazing acts (especially those on the Creation label) as well as fellow indie rockers like Dinosaur Jr., Pavement, Sebadoh, and Guided by Voices. Filling out the lineup is guitarist Ben Knight and Ann Do, whose tottering Olivia Tremor Control-meets-"Interstellar Overdrive" organ riffs coalesce with "Farmer Dave" Scher's lap steel to create a sound that, while derivative, is now at the foreground of a burgeoning new movement simultaneously based in both L.A. and London. Their debut, Once, was released in March 2001. A sophomore effort, Twice, appeared two years later.

A little. Very Poppy but not that bad either. A little late 60s easy going surf with a drop of psychedelia. Haven't really heard enough to form a really true opinion yet.

They are doing a few shows with the Pernice Brothers, though they didn't play with them Saturday night.

The bass player for the Pernice Brothers engineered for the Beachwood Sparks (he's also engineered for Dinosaur Jr. and the Silver Jews, among others), so that's the connection.

I guess you guys have missed Markie talking up the Tyde.  They are very good, I know he is looking forward to the show and I will definitely be there as well.  They don't sound much like Beachwood Sparks at all, except for Beachwood Sparks last EP.

I have both of their albums that anyone is free to get a copy of.....

I prefer once to twice though, but I concur with sparx, the blood brothers is mighty fine pop song.

And yes thanks Jadetree I have been talking about this band for 2 months, since they started playing blood brothers on the radio.

Thanks Lily I hadnt noticed either

does velvet lounge even open before 9? there will be supports for the Tyde show. So I imagine that would make a fine double header.

Dismemberment plan opening for the tyde, sounds about right to me.

Cats,

that was a fine Andrew Webber musical from the mid eighties....

however much they tried to make Elaine Paige look like a Cat, she still looked like a dog to me.

Great band.  The new album "Twice" just came out.  The single "Go ask yer Dad" is brilliant. Recommended if you like the Warlocks, BRMC, and general Slop-rock.

ERRR,

well they remind me more of Lloyd Cole vs Brian Jonestown Massacre with a hint of the strokes.

As I like all of them the tyde sound great to me.
