Happy St. Georges Day!
« on: April 23, 2004, 12:43:00 pm »
To the one or two English people like myself who are proud and grateful to be English born.

May Billy Bragg and the rest of the traitors choke on his beer today.

Let me get this straight --

You left England and became an American citizen, you hate America and can't wait to leave it for Ireland, and you often refer to England as "Little America," but you're also "proud and grateful" to have been born in England?

Yep! That about sums it up....but let me expand;

I left England for an American woman. (Fool me)

Became an American citizen out of respect for the country I live in, seeing as I stayed here just for my daughter.

I'm moving to Irleand because my wife is Irish and my sister now lives there...and it's just a hop and a skip from England.

England is most definately becoming little America, which I don't like but it's still my homeland and I love it.

By the way...when have I ever said I HATE America? I've never said that, and in fact, defended the place many times on this message board.

I am glad to have escaped, frying pan to fire, it may well be. I think I veer toward Billy Bragg. Over the top national pride is disturbing in citizens from any country.

It's only over the top national pride if it's English people showing any kind of national pride.

The Scottish are off the heads when it comes to national pride, the Irish are almost as bad. Americans are probably the worst.

God forbid an Engishman wear a St. Georges lapel pin though.

Just be thankful to all those men and women who had enough national pride to die for their country so you didn't grow up speaking German.

Somehow Ireland and Scotland dont have as much to be proud of, or as many negative stories riddling their past. America is all shiny and new, you have to forgive it some puppy like exuberance.

England is the seat of a faded empire, which once had a lot to proud about, but gloating always is unseemly. But I think you have to accept that a lot of the worlds current problems stem from mistakes made in that Empire. But at some point, I dont know when, the Jack and the St George cross became associated with football hooliganism, skinheads and the NF. New Labours attempt to retake the union Jake under the name Cool Britannia was perhaps not such a bad idea....

As for the wars they were fighting they were all over long ago, what do they know of England that only England know.

That doesn't mean I hate the place...I just want to go home! (or be much closer to it)

Yes, he has expressed his desire to move away but he also has defended this country many times when others, mostly foreigners, have insulted everyone and anything about this country. Sometimes he's defended us better than some of the Americans here.

Happy St. Georges Day, mate.    ;)
