Conors mother was having her place cleaned by a housekeeper (Clapton did not live there, I don't believe they were married). The Nanny was playing hide-and-go-seek with Connor while his mother was getting ready to go out (Clapton was coming home to take them to Central Park).
The Nanny was chasing Conor through the Apt as the housecleaner had just opened a window. He/she turned to tell the Nanny that the window was open as Conor ran past and out the open window. He fell ~50 stories to his death.
Clapton was in the elevator going up to the Apt at the time and walked in minutes after it had happened.
He wrote Tears in Heaven as his way of greiving. He let a friend use it for his movie "Rush" and it became a monster hit - he did not intend it or attempt to capatilize on it. He has let it be used for charity on more than one occasion and has performed it at many charity functions. He has written other songs about his son including "The Circus Left Town" about the last day they spent together.
