The 20 Buck Spin Festival
« on: September 14, 2004, 09:59:00 pm »
I know that not many of you are into doom metal, but for the few that care:

A friend (and co-promoter) and I decided to host a two-day festival at the Warehouse Next Door in DC, in honor of the MD/DC doom/stoner/heavy psych scene. Especially with the release of Crucial Blast's compilation  Doom Capital: MD/DC Heavy Rock Underground , we figured the time was right to have a festival in DC, home of some of the world's best heavy rock bands. "20 Buck Spin" is a song by the legendary proto-metal band Pentagram, and a title we felt was appropriate for a festival of this nature.

The event will be held on Friday, October 22, and Saturday, October 23. Friday will cost $10, and Saturday will cost $15. For both days, it will be $20. We have set up a Paypal account, so if anyone wants to order tickets, send an email to smashh8@aol.com. Tickets will be held at the door.

We haven't decided on set times and exact order yet, and the line-up is subject to change (though unlikely, as eight of the bands are local). As of today, this is roughly how it'll go (headliner listed last):

  Friday, October 22

Valkyrie (Harrisonburg, VA; NWOBHM-inspired stoner metal)
Wretched (old-school trad doom from MD)
Unorthodox (old-school trad doom from MD)
Internal Void (3/4 of Pentagram, Southern Lord Records, MD)

  Saturday, October 23

 Vog (DC/VA sludge/doom)
 The Wayward (ex-Carrion, from NoVA)
War Injun (MD, members of Earthride and Internal Void)
Nitroseed (MD, members of Earthride and Spirit Caravan)
Beaten Back To Pure (Norfolk, VA; epic sludge-metal)
5ive (Boston; Tortuga and Hydrahead Records; guitar/drums heavy drone)
Dragon Green (Allentown, PA; instrumental trio with slide projections, like Sleep without vocals)
Unearthly Trance (unconfirmed but likely; NYC slow doom with thrashy parts)

The Warehouse Next Door is located in the heart of DC and is easy to find by car or public transportation.

Yes you should. It's a project from Tyler Semrick-Palmateer (x The End). Hydra Head had the whole thing on their site for download because they were originally just demos, but they were getting so much good feedback, Hydra Head decided to release it as an EP. It's pretty eclectic. They've been described on other sites as "an incredible blend of choral/orchestrated serenity and expansive suffocating doom."

I don't think Hydra Head still has them available for download anymore, but I still have them on my computer. I can email it if you want   ;)

a little update:

rebreather (from youngstown, ohio) will be playing instead of unearthly trance. rebreather is a trio that has a couple of recordings out on infernal racket in PA, and incorporate bleak screamo-ish vocals into their sludge and post-hardcore. a great band that more should know about.

and the website for the festival should be up by this weekend.

well it looks like I'm gonna have to miss all of today's bands due to unforseen circumstances. But I'll try my damndest to make it to tomorrow's. When exactly will tomorrow's doomfest kick off/wrap up?

captain jack, there was no pentagram reunion. however, bobby liebling did show up at the beginning of internal void's set. i think if there had been more than 15 people in the room by the end of their set, he would have sang some songs. attendance was surprisingly meager.

BTW, bobby looked awful, much worse than he did in july when he sang a couple of songs with place of skulls.
