Jane's, R.E.M. on '80s Box
"Left of the Dial" chronicles rock underground

Rhino Records will release Left of the Dial: Dispatches from the '80s Underground on October 5th. The four-disc compilation includes tracks from such alternative-rock pioneers as the Replacements, Minor Threat, Husker Du, the Jam, the Smiths, R.E.M. and Sonic Youth.
Included are interviews with Greg Ginn and Peter Jesperson, founders of influential indie-rock labels SST and Twin/Tone respectively, as well as reflections on the era from Manchester scenemaker Tony Wilson and Dream Syndicate frontman Steve Wynn.

DIY punks like the Dead Kennedys and Black Flag were at the forefront of the movement and largely labored outside the reach of the limelight, while artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the recently split Jane's Addiction were able to capitalize on the momentum of the wave created by the earlier groups.

At the time of Jane's Addiction recent split, singer Perry Farrell furnished an epitaph for the band, that could easily have doubled for the groups that helped bring punk and alternative to the mainstream. "She laid a foundation for unbridled underground music to rise up on," Farrell told Rolling Stone. "The newly coined 'alternative music' came on to replace a stale music scene. We encouraged people to make scary choices."

Wow, some great bands and some great songs on there. Whoever put this together did a great job of wrapping up a decade of great music, without getting completely lost in the throngs of new-wave.

Yeah pretty cool comp.  I'm surprised they were given permission to put a Minor Threat song on there.

As Rhino did before with the No Thanks box set, these are all just fleshed out sets of compilations they've already put out.  Rhino put out a 3 post-punk discs in the late 90's.  I've got one of them.  Great compilation.

Wow - this is great!  The selections included on here that most impressed me are:

"I'm In Love With a German Film Star," Passions

 "Cattle and Cane," the Go-Betweens

"Madonna of the Wasps," Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians

 "Swamp Thing," the Chameleons U.K.

"Running Up That Hill," Kate Bush

 "Sex Beat," Gun Club

I will have to get this (perhaps arrange a giveaway? - let's cross our fingers!)  :)  for the Gun Club song alone.

 Cheers

Good selection, but ....

I'm still waiting for an 80s Nuggets-type box.  Some of "Left..." would qualify but not even enough for one disc. Most of "Left" is already available; much of it never went out of print. There's an incredible amount of stuff out there wanting attention.

(Just now, Love Tractor's cover of "Neon Nights" popped up on iTunes "party shuffle".)

I still like about half of the stuff on this comp.

Been listening to the Dead Kennedy's alot lately, and would love to hear the Drive By Truckers do a version of "Holiday in Cambodia".

Didn't notice this song during my first read through the track listing.  Great tune.

speaking of the gun club, has anyone heard the new thelonious monster album with "the gun club song".  every song is named after a band, including joy division, the jam and the germs.

>>> I picked up a Canadian copy of "Love Tractor" with bonus ep "Til The Cows Come Home" included for $4.99 used a couple weeks ago at McKay's Books & CD's in Centreville....has been out of print since '91.......the EP contains their version of "Neon Lights"......not a bad score.....
