A Weekend in the City
« on: February 13, 2007, 10:46:00 am »
Anybody have any thoughts on the new Bloc Party record?  I think sentiments have been split on the board about them, but I just picked it up and I'm unsure what to think.

I do think it explains the tour with Panic at the Disco a bit...

I think the album has a few good songs.  It's not as good as Silent Alarm, but its different, which isnt a bad thing.

listened about 4/5 times so far - the second half is very very good, the first half is taking a little longer to sink in

 overall I think its solid

We spent a weekend in the City Super Bowl weekend. Damn, was it fucking cold. We stayed at the Millenium Hilton, and had a direct view down onto Ground Zero...though the view of the Brooklyn Bridge on the other side was probably more impressive at night. Eating highlights included pizza at Grimaldis, pancakes at Clinton Street Baking Company, and ice cream at Australian Homemade. We also saw a play that wasn't bad.

Yeah, I think the middle/second half is better than the first half as well.  The huge bombast of the first three songs is pretty intense...I'm not sure what I think of that whole sound yet.

I can't decide either.

I'm not a huge fan of the over-polished sound with some bands, and I think this album sounds a little overproduced when contrasted to their last.
Was a big fan of Silent Alarm because the songs were very simple, yet extremely powerful.  They overlooked the simplicity in this one and it sort of kills the tone for me.  I love "On."  Very simple, very powerful, very pretty.  The second half of the record definitely feels less...um...agressive?  I just don't think there's enough balance.  It could be a Bloc Party remix album.
