the Mars Volta: Color Me....
« on: July 17, 2003, 02:28:00 am »
totally unimpressed.  I picked up the album for the sheer reason that At the Drive-In is/was one of my favorite bands.  And I think the album is good, although a little spastic and not quite even as far as songs and quality go.  But I figured they had to put on a ridiculous live show...

Well, the show was ridiculous, but in the worst way it could've been.  There was never any chance to get a groove on any songs, since they seemed to stress the fast-slow tempo a little too much live.  It's hard to really start digging a song when it's a minute and a half of fast tempo, then 6 minutes of slow noodling.  Dont' get me wrong; I'm all for extended jams.  I wouldn't dig Ween if I didn't.  But it just seemed to be complex and different for the sake of being so.

You could still see some of the greatness that made ATDI such a powerhouse live act, but it seemed wasted on these absurd displays of self-importance.  Yes, I know the songs are ultra serious, and the whole concept-album theme of your friend's suicide is something to keep in mind, but at least make the show a little fun.  All it seemed to me was a huge example of thinking yourself over-important.

And really, it's one thing if the singer is doing jerky robot dances to his own songs (which didn't fit either, since he only seemed to do it during the solo tempo or ridiculous noodling/noise sessions), but seeing a whole crowd of kids doing the same moves was really pathetic.  Sorry for the long, possibly rambling post.  I'm just sorely disappointed, and super tired, as I drove to NYC after the show to visit my little brother.

with the mars volta, it's either you like them or you don't. some people just can't get into it, even if they loved at the drive in. i first heard Drunkship of Lanterns, one of the most consistently fast-tempo songs on their album and fell in love with it. Granted, the album has its 'dull' moments. I agree, even if the material has a serious side but is upbeat musically, the show should be quasi-fun. I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy yourself, nkotb.

and about the jerky robotic dance moves, it's only because they're on acid.  ;)

i saw them in Calfornia and the blew me away.  true, they switched form slower to faster mant times and never very expectedly, but i think thats what made them so good.  I am jealous you saw them and cant understand how you didnt even like it.

well there's always sparta's almost obscene complacency live.  They almost show off in their complete and utter lack there of.

I saw The Mars Volta Friday night in NYC, and I have to say that I agree with nkotb in some respects. Maybe I was just overly tired, but the slow jams bored me, and I found many of the songs repetitive. But! The band does have great energy in the fast parts, and I love those tempo changes. I also liked the singer's energy while on stage. Overall, though, I was disappointed by the show. It did seem self indulgent...

However, the whole Irving Plaza night was worth it because the opener was the truly amazing Saul Williams. I've always wanted to hear him recite his poetry live, and DAMN he is incredible. His 40 mins. were worth the price of admission alone, and he definitely blew away The Mars Volta.
