Johnny Cash's moving cover of NIN
« on: February 23, 2003, 05:03:00 pm »
Johnny Cash has covered NIN's "Hurt". The video is quite moving and there is a story and a link to watch the video at the following link. Trent was apparently quite moved when he saw the video while working in the studio with Zach LaRocka.
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/newsarticle.asp?nid=17603[/url]

Oh, I heard that a couple of weeks ago for the first time and was completely knocked off my feet. It's beautiful.

I agree, but his cover of Personal Jesus from the same album is crap. What's the point of a Depeche Mode song that doesn't make you want to cry, AND dance?

To paraphrase my lovely girlfriend, "That NIN song is so teenagerish with it's lyrics:
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
It's really sad that some dumbass producer decided to have a grown man sing such juvenile crap."

I think Rick Rubin picked the covers on all of Johnny's last four albums. Part of the marketing ploy to market Johnny to a younger audience. I even heard that he has gotten some airplay on "modern rock" stations.

quote:
Originally posted by sonickteam2:
you think Cash was forced to sing that song? maybe it was HIS idea?

he sure has, several radio stations are playing "Hurt" already.
His new album gets TONS of play at the store i work at and must say, his latest album is NOT by any means what you want a new audience to think of when they hear Johnny Cash.
But believe me, its "hip" to like Johnny Cash now. (or something)

PS June wrote "Ring of Fire". Makes me laugh every time I hear Mike Ness give credit to Johnny for writing it.
