Replace That
« on: January 17, 2006, 02:59:00 pm »
Decided against using "The Replacements" as a thread topic as to prevent heart failure among some.  Interesting take on getting the word out on lesser known acts from this months Esquire.

 The Replacements
Lose the stale stuff and replace it with these four unexpected gems

 By Andy Langer | Feb 1, 2006

You own: Norah Jones, Come Away with Me. In retrospect, the ten million Norah Jones fans who bought this weren't wrong, just boring.
Replace it with: Sia, Colour the Small One. She splits the difference between Beck and Beth Orton with stunning slinkiness.

You own: O Brother, Where Art Thou? original soundtrack. How much Alison Krauss do you need?
Replace it with: The Gourds, Heavy Ornamentals . Roots mavericks offer memorable tales of lesbian roommates and Star Trek . Bonus: The album's working title was Wizard Belch .

You own: Wilco, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot . Life's too short to hang on to a great band's mediocre record.
Replace it with: Jason Collett, Idols of Exile . Neil Young and Paul Westerberg fans will recognize Collett's captivating narratives, which seem on the verge of completely falling apart.

You own: The White Stripes, Get Behind Me Satan . There are but four decent songs here. Replace it with: Deadboy & the Elephantmen, We Are Night Sky . These bayou misfits bring quiet folk and jarring metal to the crossroads; as if Jeff Buckley had covered Ziggy Stardust on the banks of the Mississippi Delta.

  Sia
  The Gourds
 Jason Collett
  Deadboy and the Elephantmen
T.Rex

The Gourds are infamous for their bluegrass version of "Gin and Juice" which everyone thinks is either Phish or Dave Matthews Band.

I'll vouch for the Gourds and Jason Collett being quality stuff. Though Collett's parent band sucks.

Jason Collett has some cool stuff.

But Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is mediocre?  No way.

That doesn't sound too promising.

Good call.

But if someone compared the Gourds to DMB or Phish, they'd probably have to be pretty ignorant musically.

esquire???  how un-forumish.  just because there's some half neked lady on the cover, no doubt.  last month's issue was better, anyway, with that awesome graffiti artist from britain.

I fully agree with this one.
Have never been a Norah Jones fan but I do like Sia.

I heard one of her songs this morning, and think I'll stick with Norah Jones.
