DMBQ tragedy
« on: November 06, 2005, 09:48:00 am »
The other day, less than a week after a triumphant show at DC9, the van carrying DMBQ rolled over between NYC and Deleware. All the members were hospitalized and the drummer, Mana "China" Nishiura, was killed.

Kurasawa and I were absolutely blown away by her playing (as well as the playing of the whole band). I've been crowing all week that it was in the top ten shows I'd ever seen. In a band of master players, her prowess with the sticks really shone through. It's a terrible loss of a great drummer.

She could really beat the hell out of those drums. At the end of the show, she didn't bat an eye as the singer took her kit apart, piece by piece, carried it off the "stage" and built a tower in the middle of the floor. She just kept on beating away, using whichever pieces remained, until she was down to one cymbal that he then finally took. By now, the tower was about six feet high, teetering precariously but still standing. The singer gave out a shriek and then flung the last cymbal like a frisbee into the tower, which caused the entire thing to break apart and collapse in a heap. End of show.

Her facial expression never changed. As soon as the tower came down, she turned and walked off stage. So cool.

I'm still reeling from this news. It's so terrible. China will definitely be missed.

i am in a state of shock. on monday afternoon, i was hugging them goodbye and seeing them off as they were driving to NYC to help out green milk from the planet orange because their van got broken into on saturday night.

i just called michelle but her voicemail was full and i couldn't leave a message. not only was china an amazing drummer, but she was very sweet, and it's hard to believe the person i was talking to about japanese bands a week ago is gone.

i lost a bunch of money getting them to play here but i would gladly lose more if it means helping them cover medical expenses. michelle didn't have health insurance.

i had a really rough week struggling with working and booking all these shows and trying to find the energy and drive to keep it up, and DMBQ rolled into town and chased away all the negativity. they really had that kind of effect on people...you couldn't watch them without a wile-wide grin on your face.

RIP china, and a speedy recovery to the rest. i'll give everyone an update if i hear from michelle.

I was just reading this in the other thread. This is terribly sad. Hope you are doing all right, snailhook.
