I don't know how to say this, but I'm somewhat disappointed in the board today. Last night, after the Pistols amazing but short show, I stopped by the Velvet Lounge as I knew I certainly needed to decompress a bit before hitting the sack. A friend with me had been told that one of the bands playing, Come Down, was pretty good and worth catching. So we did, and stayed all night to see two really good bands. Pretty different from each other, but each were really tight, enjoyable and accomplished.
Come Down reminded me a lot of the Church -- kind of dreamy radiohead alternative stuff. They're from Long Island, and I hope to catch them again. That's not usually my 'genre,' but they did a really good job with it, and the lead singer's voice was really enthralling.
Next up were the Deathray Davies, and they KICKED ASS. It was a great, raucous rock n roll show. Kind of 60s Kinks-inspired power garage pop/rock. I'm not great at describing bands, but we were dancing and bopping all over the place (which was easy to do with only 20 people there). A shame the show was on a Sunday; they've been around about 4 years, out of Dallas, and deserve a much bigger crowd.
They have four albums out, and plan to come back through town in October. Check it out. I bought CDs for both bands (okay, Come Down gave out a cd e.p.). I'm happy to share if it spreads the word.
