Vegas, baby..
« on: July 19, 2006, 08:33:00 pm »
I'm going to Vegas next month for a few days. It's a work conference thing and I will be wanting very much to ditch my co-workers and possibly catch a band or two (because I know my co-workers won't come with me to see a band), but I am having a hard time finding listings for any acts that are not Barry Manilow, Carrot Top or the Blue Man Group.  I know from my last trip to Vegas, there's a bunch of decent live-music type bars there(a la DC9 or Velvet) but I can't for the life of me remember what their names were.  Anyone been out there recently and know where I should be looking?

 Thanks in advance!

PS Tom Jones is all sold out during our trip and I'm not looking to spend $450/ticket on eBay. Sorry, Tom!

X, Rollins Band, Tapes 'N Tapes, Futureheads, Flock of Seagulls, D.I., The B52's, and about 20 zillion other acts are playing Vegas in the month of August.

check out  haunted vegas tours for a sobering experience, probably best done at the end of your stay..

show begins in a small pitch black theater, ghost images displayed on a small screen..weird death ambient music, unintelligible growls and mutters.. a twin peaks character walks out on a stage and does some surrealist/cabaret voltaire style comedy/magick show with suspiria soundtrack playing in the background. the tour guide (a retired mortician in his 70s?) boards you onto a bus and lets you get settled in. then he blasts you with microphone feedback for about thirty seconds to startle your senses... all part of the show.. the tour itself is kind of morbid. it really gives you a sense of the ugly side of vegas you only really get to know if you live there for long enough. if you go don't pay extra for v.i.p. all it means is you get to use some lousy dowsing rods (obsolete ghosthunting gear!)

yes!  the double down is badass ... apart from the Mirage poker room and the Hilton sports book, it's my favorite place in vegas

Poor timing.  A couple of weeks ago they had the Modern Drunkard Convention with a bunch of bands including Supersuckers... maybe it's an annual thing

Vegas can be tiring after 2 days...unless you like to gamble. But for a non-gambler, Vegas sucks.

I'll be there in October for three nights before I head to Hawaii.  So far, The Blue Man Group and Medieval dinner at the Ex Calibor.  Third night is up in the air right now.  The ghost tour sounded pretty cool.

the real key to a good vegas trip (especially if you have a big group) is making firm plans before you get there and FORCING people to get out of the casinos ... otherwise everyone just ends up gambling for 18 hours a day, which can be a hell of a lot of fun, but there's a lot more to do there than just gamble ... definitely go to the double down saloon ...
