CHESTERTOWN - The head pharmacist at
Happy Harry's[/i] drug store was arrested on theft charges after becoming addicted to OxyContin and allegedly stealing almost $59,000 worth of the drug and about $2,600 worth of stimulants.
Maryland State Police said Richard DiGiovanni, 30, of Middletown, Del., was charged with theft scheme over $500, theft scheme under $500, theft over $500, and theft under $500.
A news release from state police said on July 31 a substitute pharmacist at Happy Harry's, 905 Washington Ave., discovered a discrepancy in the number of OxyContin pills listed in the computer inventory versus the number of pills actually on hand. Police said OxyContin is a schedule 2 narcotic. The substitute pharmacist reported the discrepancy to the store's head office.
An audit was done which showed 12,035 OxyContin pills valued at $59,965.60 was missing from inventory. Also missing were 3,742 pills of various stimulants valued at $2,649.87. The total loss was $61,614.47.
