You know, I don't really know how to review it.  I liked it far less than the other five people I was with....

Factually, they played for a total of 42 minutes (that's the main set and a two song encore).  Though the band is just the two of them, they had a drumer and another guitarist, likely session musicians.  Thank freakin' god, because the only person who looked like he was enjoying playing at all was the session guitarist.  He was very good, and really hysterical -- he'd rock out, then suddenly go deadpan (I think the deadpan schtick was him mocking Sharin Foo and Sune Rose Wagner -- Sharin appeared as if she was in a coma, and Sune, then, was damn well dead).

That said, the music was great.  Much better live than on record (when you're listening to the album, it gets repetitively "wall of noise," but live you feel the variations much more).  So, on that front, it was pretty cool.  But they as a band were just so uninspiring.

Crowd was small, but the folks there were really getting into it, which made me all the more pissed at Sharin and Sune.

So, that's  the nutshell from me.  Have to say, though I went anyway and probably would have gone with The Sounds initially on the bill, it was The Sounds I was really looking forward to.  If anyone knows why they cancelled, I'd be interested to know.  Hope they make up the date sometime.

And by the way, the folks I went with enjoyed it more.  They dug the music, and weren't as dismayed with the band as I was.  So....

According to their website:

"Unfortunately, the sounds had to cancel the rest of their american tour opening for the ravonettes due to sickness, sorry to everyone who made plans and wanted to see the band, they will be back to tour america soon, will keep everyone posted, the band extends their regrets and promises to come back rocking harder and healthier... "

bags, thanks for the review. it really doesn't suprise me much that the raveonettes were less than enthusiastic. good to know that you could hear some more variations in their music when played live though. i feel like most of the album is pretty similar -- but i guess that also has to do with the whole b minor thing.
suprised the crowd was small. i thought there was a lot of buzz about this band.

I was really surprised the crowd was small myself.  But I'm learning that I am *clueless* about who's got a pretty good fan base.  The Raveonettes and the Datsuns, both bands I read about *everywhere,* did not sell out.

Definitely better live (both bands, in fact), but uninspired (Ravonettes).  By the way, I see The Datsuns are coming back -- that was a truly fun show.  Felt like a wonderful metal schtick night (one of their songs even has a Spinal Tap lick, I am positive).  If you can get into that, I recommend it.
