Coachella vs. New Orleans Jazz Fest
« on: February 05, 2005, 12:37:00 am »
Both are on the same weekend and I am trying to convince my other half that the bands at Coachella are more worthwhile than those at the New Orleans Jazz Fest.  While the New Orleans environment is going to be more appealling than a desert for 2 days, I do not know if I am able to stomach 2 days of jam bands!!!

Actually, Jazz Fest is the weekend of April 22nd as well -- it's always two weekends. I'm a New Orleans native and while I don't think you can really compare Jazz Fest to Coachella on a musical level (both great showcases for live music but completely different), I can say that by late April-early May it usually is hotter than hell in N.O.  It won't be over 100 degrees like Coachella may be but the humidity is unmerciful coupled with the actual temperature.  If you go to Jazz Fest, you'll see the ambulances lined up, ready to haul people off suffering from sunstroke and heat exhaustion . . . and they do in droves.

Agree, the desert heat is much more bearable than the humid, sticky heat like NoLA's. Plus, as it gets later in the day in Indio, it starts to cool off and you'll likely need a light jacket when it gets dark.

I love Jazz Fest -- I've been three times, and always been quite lucky with the weather -- it never was unbearable.  And I can assure you, it's not all jam bands, or I wouldn't be near the place.  The environment is awesome because you go to the fairgrounds for jazz fest during the day, but then you're out in N.O. in the evenings.  Stay in nice hotels, eat at amazing restaurants, etc.

That said, the lineup at coachella is fantastic.  Not sure the desert's my scene, though.  If it were, I'd be all over it.

Which festival was Edwyn Collins singing about?

Don't try so hard to be different
The cracks are beginning to show
You drift like a cloud through the festival crowd
In a frock coat from Saville Row
You've just been an all-night party
Where I have to admit it takes pluck
To go out on the floor and proclaim "What a bore"
In a T-shirt that reads "Disco Sucks"
Yes, here he comes, the not-so-young
 Pretender to the Throne
 He's singing "Rag, Momma, Rag"
Won't you give that poor dog a bone?
And he's wondering why we can't connect
When he's sworn to us that he's totally wrecked
On the rustic charm that he affects
 On a public schoolboy whim
With a raggle taggle plastic gypsy
 Robert Zimmerframe
 With a synthesized accordian
 A-scramblin' up my brain
 With a fiddle-dee-dee a fiddle on high
Excuse me folks while I kiss the sky
Or at any rate give it one more try
 before I die
 before I die

 The overrated hit the stage
 Overpaid and over here
 And their idea of counter-culture's
 Momma's charge account at Sears
And they're wondering why we can't connect
With the ritual of the trashed guitar
 One more paltry empty gesture
The ashes of a burned out star
Yes here they come, both old and young
 A contact low or high
The gathering of the tribes descending
 Vultures from a caustic sky
 The rotting carcase of July
An ugly sun hung out to dry
Your gorgeous hippy dreams are dying
 Your frazzled brains are putrifying
 Repackaged, sold and sanitizied
 The devil's music exorcised
You live, you die, you lie, you lie, you die          perpetuate the
 lie
              perpetuate the
 lie
              perpetuate the
 lie
      Just to perpetuate the
 lie

Yes yes yes it's the summer festival the truly detestable summer festival

its not like "the desert" really. i mean, its not like you are standing in the sand, next to a cactus watching some bands.  sure it can be REALLY hot. but in 2003 it was about 90 during the day (with NO humidity, 90 aint bad) and 60 at night. but you're on a plush grass polo field at the venue...and its in a resort town, you dont have to ride a camel to the show.

last years 114 degrees was hot, but as long as you wear a white long sleeve tshirt and jeans, its really not SO bad.

i heard ACL was hotter last year than Coachella was.

We got a chance to go to both...AWESOME.  Hot alternative Coachella Pixies-Radiohead-Cure; Hot well rounded Roots-My Morning Jacket-Elvis C.  This years Coachella looks pretty good Bauhaus-NIN-etc.  See you there.
