I haven't heard of any of the performers at the Iota benefit, but the list of performers at the benefit in Raleigh is impressive, for anybody who might be heading to NC.

I think unknownness of talent sort of reflects the lack of a DC alt-country scene.

Are you sure that's a benefit for Alejandro? The iota site lists a benefit for him on Sunday 23 from 1-5, with no performers listed. The listing for 22 doesn't specify what it's a benefit for.
I'm going to iota on Saturday, I'll ask 'em what's up and post it here.

These are two separate events.  The Saturday one is for a scholarship fund in honor of Dave Daly, who died suddenly (and way prematurely) on 11/22 last year, and whose son Skip works with me.  (Skip is also a partner in the indie label BOSmusic and the bass player for Oddbox.)  The family wants to turn the anniversary into something positive.  It's a good cause, and I can vouch for two of the musicians--Todd and Denny both put on a good show.  If you like folk-singer/songwriter-alt country type music, your $10 would be well spent there.

The Alejandro Escovedo benefit I know nothing about--will look for Twangirl's report on that one.

I don't know about the benefit, but everyone should go see Marah on 11/24 at Iota.  Great band.

Here's the skinny for the Alejandro benefit. Confirmed so far: Last Train Home, Lee Wilhoit, Jumpin' Jupiter, Little Pink--a damn fine lineup as is, but others have been invited and may be added this week. If I hear anything I'll post it here.

Local country, alt-country and rock performers will come together to raise money for Alejandro Escovedo, the esteemed singer-songwriter from Austin, Tex. Named singer-songwriter of the decade for the '90s by No Depression magazine, Escovedo is currently undergoing treatment to address complications from hepatitis C. He has no health insurance and so a trust has been established to help with medical costs. Benefits have taken place in clubs around the country, and this show will include performances by Last Train Home, Bill Kirchen, Brandon Butler of Canyon, Little Pink, Karl Straub, Lee Wilhoit, Naughty Pine and a few special guests as well.

Corgan, Browne Singing for Escovedo Tribute
 Mon January 19, 2004 08:33 PM ET

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Billy Corgan, Jackson Browne and Los Lobos are among the artists who will contribute to the tribute album "Por Vida," which will help singer/songwriter Alejandro Escovedo pay his Hepatitis C medical bills.
Others who will appear on the two-disc album, due out in April via Or Music, are John Cale, the Jayhawks, Howe Gelb, Calexico, Chuck Prophet, Peter Case and Ian Hunter.

They join previously confirmed participants Whiskeytown, Joe Ely and the Flatlanders, Jennifer Warnes and Los Lonely Boys, as well as the artist's brother, Pete Escovedo, and niece, Sheila E.

The latest in a series of U.S. benefit concerts for Escovedo will take place Jan. 25 in Charlotte, N.C. Whiskeytown alumna Caitlin Cary leads the bill of more than 15 acts that will perform at the Double Door Inn.
