Outkast album
« on: September 23, 2003, 01:23:00 am »
I'm not really into rap but might be hip enough to buy the new Outkast album that comes out today.  I know this might be a stretch but has anybody given the album a listen that could comment on it?

Well, first thing that strikes me is that its NOT really the new Outkast CD.  Its 2 solo ablums from Andre and Big Boi. Its a double disc and i dont even think they are on each others discs. But I did listen to the Big Boi CD and if you like Outkast, you will like this. I havent gotten a chance to hear Andre's side though, as I think Big Boi is more the voice of Outkast anyway  :)
But still, 2 solo albums do no equal a new CD from the band, in my book.

just bought it today, and so far so good.  pretty decent.

but, how come outkast is always the "safe" hip-hop group that indie kids and rock fans feel good about buying or name-dropping?

I don't know about safe, but as far as hip-hop goes Outkast are one of the few that I can tolerate listening to.  Oh yeah, and Ludacris too.

I am a "rock" fan, but I like Outkast not because they are "safe" but because their music is melodic and intelligent, unlike some of the other rap music out there.
Much the same way I listen to De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets - these groups aren't afraid to consider other genres and sound good while doing it - so fresh and so clean.

white people always like the rap groups that crossover to other genres....cause we dont like fucking RAP!
ahem, anyway, good creative hip hop is always nice, theres plenty more than Outkast and Tribe and the popular ones.
Jedi Mind Tricks, Dalek, Aesop Rock, Blackalicious, Anti-Pop Consortium and Hi-Tek are damn all good hip hop selections.

It's hard for a cracker like me to relate to slappin' my ho around like a pimp or Ike Turner, ridin' round in my caddy poppin'caps in other niggaz, and dealin' to crack ho's that suck pitbulls' dicks for a fix!
But if you want to talk about a PHAT-ass booty that needs to be tapped and you put it to a good beat, whether an old Blue Note Jazz song or an old P-Funk tune, then I am willing to listen to it

Yeah, that stuff was popular in the hip-hop world... back in 94' or something like that.

The majority of the "(c)rap" that I hear on mainstream radio are either love songs or songs about "blinging whips" and "hot ice".
