Can someone clarify for me the relationship between clearchannel/livenation venues/radio stations, etc.?

Does livenation force people to play livenation venues? Do they not book local acts? They seem to suck, but why?

It's not always clear, but the best way to explain it is that Clear Channel used own a concerts division, but spun it off over fears that they were going to face suits from the US government, mostly based on anti-trust grounds, but there were others.

So the concert division became Live Nation, an "indepent company" owned and publicly traded company.  However, it's not very independent as their are many crossovers of board members and executives (mostly by familial relationship) between the two companies.

Clear Channel kept the media market, owning billboards, TV and radio stations.  They are currently in the process of becoming a privately owned company (interestingly enough, one of the purchasers is Mitt Romney).

LiveNation owns 75 US venues and nearly 50 more world wide.  They also have booking rights (but not ownership rights) to nearly 3 dozen other venues.  LiveNation will sponsor your tour if you agree to play exclusively in the LiveNation venues, when available in that city, which makes booking acts difficult for local independent venues.
