The Waterboys rookie
« on: December 05, 2003, 06:03:00 pm »
What will this show be like?  I'm interested to hear what they sound like.  What other bands sound similar?  Will I be blown away?  Is it a can't miss show?  Fill me in please.

PS Does anyone know what the tickets price is.  The State Theatre's website doesn't list it.

I don't think other board members will disagree with me if I say I'm the board authority on the Waterboys.

Having been a fan for YEARS, and seen them many many, many times..if you like live concerts with excellent musicians you will enjoy the show.

The Waterboys are basically Mike Scott and Steve Wickham on fiddle, other than those two the line up changes..from what I've read about these shows it's mainly an accoustic show.
I would say their music is celtic folk/rock for the most part, and if it's accoustic you will probably get a more folk oriented performance. They are very unique sounding, not harsh "drinking songs" like the Pogues, but not WAMU Thistle and Shamrock with Fionna Ritchie either!!!

I already had Bowie tickets, of whom I'm another huge fan of, or it would've been a very difficult decision for me on which show to see

Are they at all like The Chieftains?  I'll let you know how the concert is.

Bowie's postponed due to illness Mankie, so now you can see The Waterboys on Sunday. They haven't announced a makeup date for Bowie yet but I'm sure your tix will be good for it, whenever it is.

nope, well some of their stuff might be a little like the chieftans - I think I'm in the minority on this board because I prefer their earlier 'big music' sound to their later more irish sounding stuff (fishermans blues in particular is excellent)

their latest album is a bit of a snoozer though

I saw them Wednesday in Annapolis

The violinist was left home because of an operation, so it was just Mike Scott on guitar and the keyboard player....they did a very good job compensating for the violin's abscence, though at times, such as The Pan Within and Fisherman's Blues, it was clearly missing

its acoustic obviously, they played two hour long sets....songs ranged from Pagan Place outtakes to Universal Hall stuff.....

it was a very good show, and very well received...well worth the money and one of the better shows I've seen this year

Although the Waterboys without a fiddler is a huge downer...and here's my big chance to fill in for Wickham and hit the big time...AND  I'VE GOT A FUCKING BROKEN WRIST!

I love just about everything they've done to be honest...I even like Mike Scotts solo albums, and Universal Hall (latest album) is more like his solo work than The Waterboys so can see why some Waterboys fans wouldn't warm up to it.

Jgatz...I hope you enjoyed the show last night, I certainly did. Steve Wickham was sorely missed but the piano definately did a fine job trying to fill the void left by the lack of a fiddle...it was especially missed on "A man is in love" (our wedding song by the way) which brought a lump to my throat...I'm just an old softy at heart I know.

Mike Scott has got to be my favorite rock eccentric of all times, and the way he got those gobshites at the bar to shut the hell up was classic.

Maybe "Jonesy" will hook you up with some dapper new threads:

Bowie and Hilfiger Team Up for Fashion!
They are the goon squad and they're coming to town

[Posted Monday, December 8th, 2003 04:00:00 Pitchfork Central Time]

 Jeremy C. Baron reports:
OMFGROTFLMAO! David Bowie and Tommy Hilfiger have joined forces to create a new line of brand clothing. By their powers combined-- they can make you look simply fabulous! David Bowie and his supermodel wife Iman were chosen by Hilfiger as the "faces" of the new clothing line, redundantly named "H Hilfiger." Wonder what the 'H' stands for... could it be... hideous? Zoing!

You may all be wondering why in the world Hilfiger would choose Bowie and Iman as his new models. Sure, Bowie was big on fashion back in the day, and Iman is a supermodel (still?), but... I'm not going to use the words "old" and "washed up" in this article. I'll just let Hilfiger's press release do the work for me:

"David Bowie and Iman bring everything I'm looking for to represent this brand-- music, style, elegance, creativity, sophistication-- they're a living testament to all that influences and inspires me... David is not only a rock 'n' roll legend and a true artist, he's also a style icon whose evolving look over the years has had a huge impact on the world of fashion and music. And Iman, in addition to being the ultimate supermodel and a style icon in her own right, is the ideal woman-- smart, entrepreneurial, chic, beautiful, ambitious, and creative. Together they communicate the essence of the H Hilfiger lifestyle perfectly, and I am honored to feature them in my new campaign." Okay, I guess that answers my question.

Bowie was very pleased with the opportunity. As quoted in the aforementioned press release: "I very much admire Tommy's ability to weave so many influences into his work... Iman and I are thrilled to be working with him." And Iman? "I'm very taken by Tommy's new H Hilfiger line," says she. "And working with both David and Ellen Von Unwerth on this project is a real plus, and such a lot of fun." Shiiiiit.

The photo shoots took place this past month, and will debut in April of next year in various magazines. You all may be wondering exactly what this new "H Hilfiger" line looks like. Well, being a music journalist and not a member of the fashion release, I'll have my good friend press release do the talking: "H Hilfiger is sophisticated, sexy and refined, and its high-end quality and signature detailing make it the gold standard among Hilfiger's diverse product offerings." Okay, that helped.

Bowie is one of those people who looks super-cool no matter what he wears, he is the icon of style after all. However, it doesn't mean others will. Not sure what the target market is for this new stuff, because Bowies main fan-base are the 35+ age group I would guess, and that group are not inclined to buy something just because their favorite singer does..are they? Well, I'm not anyway.

His wife by the way, is so beautiful she could be Irish.  :)

Just my tuppence worth on the subject.
