entertainment options for tonight?
« on: May 02, 2008, 02:21:00 pm »
- the kills @ BC (don't know much about them other than their myspace songs, which are good)
 - eddie izzard (i liked his show last night, could try grabbing an extra out front of the venue - several on offer last night)
 - we fought the big one @ marx cafe (been wanting to check it out)

anything else i should consider?  recommendations?  iron man is off the menu, catching that back home on sunday night.

if you would like to add something different to your musical taste, you could try the new production from Washington National Opera, Tamerlano, with Placido Domingo and David Daniels as Bazajet and Tamenrlano...pretty good stuff I might say

interesting suggestion.  normally i'd be up for checking it out, but the cheapest ticket on offer right now is $170 + fees... more than i'm willing to spend on opera.  dang.

Yes.  I chose Zombie Strippers as the one movie I will be seeing in the theater this year.

Maybe I'm not the most objective guy on this board, but I recommend WFTBO at Marx Cafe (3203 Mt. Pleasant St. NW). Besides, WFTBO goes on until 3am, so you can stop by (no cover!) even if you catch a film or show earlier in the evening...

Here's what William Alberque wrote about WFTBO on BYT (not that any of this is true, but still...)

We??re Still Fighting - WFTBO Four Year Anniversary!

Rick Taylor and Brandon Grover are the most important DJs in Washington, DC.

That??s not to take away from DJs that mattered in the past (i.e., DJ Mohawk Adam, Jim and Jon, ESL, the Spilt Milk crew). It??s simply recognition that their monthly ??We Fought the Big One? event at the Marx Cafe is the most consistently interesting and remarkable DJ night going.

Why? Because against all odds, they??ve created a lasting and well-attended DJ night dedicated to the most wonderful obscure indie music. The first Friday of every month, you??ll see a collection of old music-heads, record collectors, post-punk obsessives, and, remarkably, some beautiful young things, all gathered together to listen to music. Other DJ nights focus on getting people to dance ?? WFTBO gets people listening, talking, sharing, and occasionally taking notes.

On the occasion of their fourth gala anniversary, they??re putting out a mixed CD of some of their more remarkable finds over the past year. I got an early copy, and will give you a quick guided tour. Note that if you go to Marx Café after, say, 10, this Friday night, simply walk up to Brandon or Rick, and, believe it or not, they??ll just give you a copy. Weird.

The location mainly. But also it's just awkward on the inside and it always seems to take forever for service.
nothx

Due to work commitments and the long drive, yet again, I had to settle for the Air Atlantic Underground Radio version of We Fought The Big One. For you professional surfers or those lucky enough to be off on Tuesday afternoons between 1:00-3:00PM, you can hear the rebroadcast.

Sweets, I hope you went to WFtBO and would like to know what you thought. Rick and Brandon do a nice job. My favorite DJ night that DC or Baltimore has to offer.

Also, I kind of like the Marx Cafe and have never had a problem with the service. One of the more comfortable places I've been to in DC. Not so much physically but socially. Almost none of that isolating cold faux hipster attitude you get from most other places. A lot like The Warehouse Next Door use to be but much, much nicer physically and a much better selection of beverages.

sorry jags, never made it.  ended up working really eff'ing late, hung out at callat703's, grabbed a late beer on the way home and watched some hockey highlights.  kinda lame on my part but just didn't have the motivation required for exploring a new scene, solo.
