Is the bitrate on the MP3s 192 or better?  After the 50 song trial do you actively need to cancel or will it cancel it for you automatically?

192 VBR LAME encoding and you have cancel during the trial period or else you automatically become a subscribe.  I believe it's automatic also when you download track 51.

There is also loads of great stuff via Rykodisc, Twin Tone (Mats), Yep Roc, Matador, Anti, 4AD, Beggars Banquet, Kill Rock Stars,

I looked over the site and I think they have the best downloading plan by far of all the legal music purchasing sites, in that they're not treating their consumers like criminals.  The only thing that sketches me out a bit is the prepay thing...I don't mind entering a credit card number at the point of sale, but I'm not really into having my information stored somewhere online, regardless of how secure they say it is.

Even at point-of-sale, your credit card number is stored.

I know...I guess it's more the idea of automatically being charged month to month that bothers me.

I've been a eMusic subscriber since 2001 and haven't, knock on wood, had any problems.  Just be aware that there isn't any "good" music like Linkin Park for download.  Lurk on the bbs there and you'll findout what I mean.  They do however have the early Coldplay and Keane singles released via Fierce Panda available.

Several people were saying eMusic RIP when they dropped the unlimited download plan awhile back.  But despite a bumpy road at times eMusic has kept chuggling along.  Me thinks that you'll see more of the smaller indie labels with inactive catalogs like Lovitt start going with eMusic as a way of generating at least some revenue.
