a friend in NYC was telling me about this flash mob/performance art/whatever group that would occasionally pick a random small-time band that was playing a dive bar in NYC, and they'd buy up all the tickets so the showe was a sell-out, learn all their songs so they could sign along, danced & yelled like fanatics, told the band how honored they were to finally see them live, and generally treat the unsuspecting small-timers like rock stars.  i can only imagine what it was like for the band once they returned to hicksville: "how was your gig in NYC? <snicker>" "uh, actually, we sold out the club, everyone knew our music and they demanded 4 encores" "yeeeaaaaah, riiiiight..."

sounds like an absolute hoot, i would have loved to be in on one of these.  poor band, tho, if they ever scheduled a second gig in NYC and no one shows up...

if the bands' PR person wasn't on this board, i'd suggest that Kim Cameron and the Side FX band might be prime targets for such "star treatment"

This sounds like the general treatment for most bands with even the slightest buzz that play at the Velvet Lounge, only to never be heard from again.
