new PUERTO RICO FLOWERS single, and LP info
« on: February 14, 2011, 11:22:25 am »

3 Sisters" is the new single by Puerto Rico Flowers from the forthcoming debut album "7". Once again following the previous format, this album contains 7 songs of pride, pomposity and pretense that will satisfy your every emotional need.  PRF main man John Sharkey III has spent the past year living his life with these 7 songs running endlessly through his head.  The first transmission from this record is a lush, driving 6-minute epic that builds considerably on the swift one-two punch of last year's "4" 12" EP, and "2" 7" single. Out may/june on Fan Death Records.

first mini review of 7 here
http://www.bmoremusic.net/2011/03/puerto-rico-flowers-3-sisters.html

Our friends and proprietors of my favorite record label in Baltimore, Chris and Sean of Fan Death Records, recently sent over the single to a forthcoming LP in the works.

The forthcoming release is by Puerto Rico Flowers, and it's called 7. Its due out on wax this summer, and follows up the EP titled 4 and the 7" called 2 that came out last year on Fan Death. I was sent the rough mixes of the new record yesterday, and have played nothing else since. It appears likely that this is going to be the biggest record that Fan Death has released, as John Sharkey III may be relinquishing his opus upon us.

"3 Sisters" is the first single to be heard from the new LP, and is a solid example of the massive nature of the forthcoming record. With his first two releases Sharkey displayed his ability to sound huge while keeping it incredibly simple, with sparse blends of synths, guitars, and drums that sounded much more prevalent when put together. This presence is what anchors "3 Sisters", easily Puerto Rico Flowers' heaviest pop song to date.

While the single hits harder than Gravedigger's descent onto junkyard cars, it's the more intimate moments on the record that will likely cement this as an instant classic. The last track is the best example of this, as "After The Weekend" recalls Neil Young's more intimate moments, all while maintaining the grungy dark-wave vibe more commonly found. Fan Death told me it's his "See The Sky About To Rain" or "Philadelphia".

The new record finds Sharkey working with Philly's Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile,The War on Drugs, Clockcleaner, FNU Ronnies) on production. Kurt Vile guests on the record, appearing on the track "Keep Me Around". 7 is out via Fan Death Records in May/June.

Stream whole lp here: http://soundcloud.com/fandeathrecords/sets/puerto-rico-flowers-7/

With Puerto Rico Flowers, John Sharkey III is the new prime mover of the dark pop resurgence. After the smoke blew free from the rubble that was Clockleaner, Sharkey burrowed deep into the smoother sound the band had folded under in order to find his own voice. From 4 to 2, his newly crafted Puerto Rico Flowers has sliced through all the current buzz with a rich, saturated sound coupled with ever-surprising pop sensibilities. Every song from Let?s Make Friends to his cover of When Your Lonely Heart Breaks has not been carried by pulsing streams of synth, but instead by rich bass lines rallied onwards by subdued war drums. All of this has been alchemized by the emphatic voice of Sharkey himself. His signature croon dips towards John Cale and Dave Gahan, with the record spilling out into greater similarities with bands such as Depeche Mode (with nods to early New Order). Keeping the same curt demeanor in tow, as with previous releases 2 and 4, the project will see its first proper full-length simply titled 7. Here, the evolution of sound continues to new dynamisms while maintaining the same foundation of simplicity. Freezing Tears places a steady beat behind the wheel while Sharkey?s flowing vocals shift melancholic gears, and After The Weekend sees PRF exploring new, quieter places. And yet, the anthemic quality of songs such as 3 Sisters and I Feel Good hit with the same power as Let?s Make Friends. Overall, 7 illustrates a maturation and a liqueur smoothness of sound. The raw traits of the previous PRF releases have not been lost, but instead transformed into an organically focused execution. Embraced together, this new issuance of sounds is not unlike a skinhead crying.
RIYL: John Cale, New Order, Brian Eno, the 2011 pitching rotation
