Tweedy to publish poetry
« on: January 12, 2004, 02:40:00 pm »
Yachting?

 I have never been yachting
 or on a boat
 but
 I imagine it
 a passionate bath
 with an older brother
 gentle then turning
 competitive
 as he studies
 for the bar

Jeff Tweedy To Release Poetry Book, Wilco Fans Bursting With Antici....pation

Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy is set to release his first book of original poetry in March. Enitled Adult Head, the collection (to be published by Zoo Press) will consist of an industry-standard sized 50 pages and is the very first in what is being called The Nightengale Editions. The publishers insist that " The Nightengale Editions are being created to explore the relationship between song and word and explore both the literary possibility and literary merit of contemporary popular lyricists and their material on the page." They hope to publish 2-4 books annually but do not list any other writers involved, only an advisory board which includes Stanley Fish and Rolling Stone Editor David Fricke.

If "yachting" is anything to go by....should be utter utter crap.

But why should he change the habit of a lifetime?

Why would you take a bath with your brother while he's studying to become a lawyer?

I think his point is why the fuck would anyone want to go yachting? It's as silly as taking a bath with your law school brother.

I think his point is that he has all this shite poetry that he's going to put in a book so all the Wilco die-hards will flock to buy and he'll make some coin from it.

The beuty of lyrics and poetry are in the eye of the beholder.  Set "Yachting" to music with a nice hook and it may be alright.  Without such, it sounds a little silly, as would the following:

 Oh there's a magazine
 And a tape machine
 Oh that's everything
 Oh yeah

that is like the worst poem i have ever read. i'm sorry. bathing with your lawyer brother and yachting are both insipid and may induce vomiting.

jeff tweedy, i love your music, but please, don't resort to poetry. although i know all of your die hard fans will eat it up like it's delicious and delectable.

Apparently, Tweedy has also branched out into the fashion world as well...

Yeesh.  Rock lyrics are NOT poetry.  What a load of pretentious crap.  Although, to be fair, Bob Dylan came mighty close.

Some Morrissey lyrics are very poetic too.

Next Mankie is going to try telling us that Morrissey, like Bowie, is heterosexual. Not that it makes a difference to him, mind you.

Agreed. Dylan rocked the poetry pretty hard. As did Morrissey, except when he tried to make a little old bike "desolate."

And just for kicks, I might try to say that Conor Oberst is quite a poet. Or just really good at sounding smart. Much like most of the people on this board   :D  (Myself included)
