Paul Weller three nights in NYC
« on: November 15, 2006, 11:05:00 am »
Christmas just came early to the Vinyl household, as I just got the three day pass to this event...

Paul Weller to Play 3 Nights in New York City

The legendary Paul Weller will be bringing his full band over from the UK for three very special and exclusive shows at Irving Plaza in New York, presented by SPIN Magazine in association with Adidas Originals.

For the first time ever Paul Weller will hold a three-night stand in the United States to perform music from his entire 30 year career.

Over the past few years, Weller has sprinkled his set lists with a couple of Jam and Style Council songs. However, with the forthcoming release of his first ever career-spanning box set titled Hit Parade, Weller will focus on each glorious segment of his vast songbook. Each night will feature a selection of songs encompassing his entire career, but will also focus on a specific time period as well. The schedule is as follows:

Jan 29th - An Evening with Paul Weller: Spotlighting The Music of The Jam

Jan 30th - An Evening with Paul Weller: Spotlighting The Music of The Style Council

Jan 31st - An Evening with Paul Weller: Spotlighting His Entire Career

All three shows are being presented by SPIN Magazine in association with Adidas Originals. These shows are exclusive to the US and similar evenings will not be scheduled overseas. Tickets will go on sale on Friday, November 17th and are sure to move fast.

pm if you need the presale password...

This will be a fun three nights of one my heroes doing songs from his entire catalog.  I'm most looking forward to the second night with the Style Council material as the group never toured the US. Hopefully, the special guests for that night will include Mick Talbot and Dee C. Lee.  I'm not holding my breathe on any surprises for first night, and while Steve White is a great drummer it was Rick Buckner who provided the SNAP! in the Jam's sound.  I'd be content with lots of latter day Jam material circa The Gift.  As for the last night I be up for hearing Stanley Road start to finish.

I realize this is supposed to be an "exclusive" 3-night gig in NYC but any chance of a surprise show at the backstage of the Black Cat?  :D

Well it should be interesting to see what transpires on those nights... The naysayers over on the Weller forum are saying it's all a load of hype and he'll play the same stuff he's being playing for awhile.  I seriously hope no one is expecting a Jam reunion as there is serious bad blood between Paul and his former band mates and the chances of it happening are almost nil.

I'm really excited now as Weller has acknowledged in the press he will be doing as advertised songs from the Jam, The Style Council and solo material.  I admittedly was beginning to give to much credence to those claiming the three themed nights were the invention of the promoter in order to sell tickets and that the three shows were just going to be regular shows possibly with similar setlists. Taking my typically zen approach to such things, I knew regardless of what was played each night I was getting to see one of my heroes in a great city.

I'm sitting here listening to "Stanley Road" and "Wildwood" realizing just how amazing these shows will be!

  From the Village Voice

"It's a bit of a challenge," he says, "to play some tunes we haven't played forever, or for a long time anyway. I mean, it's not like each
night's going to be exclusively Jam and Style Council. We're going to play more songs than we normally play, but it'll still be a mixture of
 things."

Uh oh. Maybe Jam night won't be as pure as you might assume. But however this holy trinity of anticipated performances goes down, know that none of thisâ??not the boxed set, not the linked concertsâ??was Paul Weller's doing. "None of them were my idea," he says. "If it doesn't work out, it's not my idea."

  From Newsday by Ira Robbins

"I don't want to give too much away," he says, "but we'll start off and do 10 Jam or Style Council tunes, and then a normal set. People [shouldn't] expect us to do a greatest hits thing - we don't really do that. Hopefully, my audience will understand that it's going to be more B-sides or album tracks as opposed to [The Jam's 1980 British chart-topper] 'Going Underground.'"

 ...

Weller normally includes a few Jam oldies ("That's Entertainment," "A Town Called Malice," "In the Crowd") in his sets, but others, he says, "I haven't played since I wrote them, which is a long, long time ago. So I've had to relearn them [using] songbooks, which is quite weird. As a middle-aged man of 49, which I'm going to be this year, I have to find an emotional connection to sing them properly."

Kosmo,I wish you well in NYC! I hate the fucking fact that I'm not going to this shindig. I was lucky enough to see the Jam during the '81-'82 period, but this will be SWEET! I was curious if you knew that this event was also taking place with Mr. Weller in NY.

I also like this bit of news from the Ira Robbins piece...

Drummer Steve White has been with him since the Style Council days. Tuesday's show highlighting that band's repertoire, Weller says, "will be special for me and Whitey, 'cause we haven't played those songs for 20 years or more. It brings back good memories for us." And, undoubtedly, for fans.
