These are the two theories about the origins of Black Friday:

"Black Friday" (as it is known in the retail industry, supposedly because it's the day when retailers turn the corner and see their income statements move out of the red and into the black, or it's the day when retail workers are exposed to the worst crowds and customer behavior).

Nothing about black people. I actually didn't see any black people today at Best Buy. lol

At least that's what my wife says; she worked at K-Mart as a teen.

What's the "real" reason?  I didn't see any sordid controversy noted in the Wikipedia entry. [/b]

Joe M., your first theory is right.  Any economist will tell you that.  When sales are going swimmingly, companies consider themselves "in the black."  And thus you have Black Friday, because everyone goes out and buys everything and gives into the overall lunacy.

Work retail on BF and you'll find Joe's second definition fits better. But the mainstream media won't say that because it would sound anti-business.

I went to REI today.  There may have been as many staff as there were shoppers.

I think this weekend's nice weather will lead to a poor weekend for retail sales.

I went into Best Buy at 9PM tonight, asked about the westinghouse monitor and one of their PC reps was nice enough to order one for me at the sale price so I'll be picking it up in two to three days.

I think it's a combination of the two theories.  I don't think there's anything to the racial theory.  In fact, the theory itself is kinda racist.

Obviously you didn't work at a K-Mart on the South Side of Chicago.

All you fools should know by now that Rhett is an expert on all matters concerning race, class and mass comsumerism.  No point in even arguing with him, really.

It's not like I was saying anything debateable.

Pointing out there there's going to be a lot of black people at a K-Mart on the South Side the day after Thanksgiving is like saying there's going to be a lot of white people at a Hold Steady show.

Is it because Thanksgiving is also known as 'White Thursday'?

In any event I am deeply offended to the very marrow of my personal beliefs as a human being and citizen of the global village, as is my wont.  The shocking phrase 'Black Friday' will wound me deeply if it's spoken directly to my face, and I would respond with violence to the speaker.

I work at the Springfield Mall, and yesterday was Dead, dead dead. I think if it had been raining it would have been much busier.

Friday wasn't as bad as I thought - of course the previous BFridays I had worked an open to close shift in electronics at Sears... the money was worth it but oi.

10 hours in a mall each day the past 2 days is starting to catch up with me. Children deserve to be punted.
