Death Cab for Cutie is #4 on the Billboard pop album charts for the week, right ahead of Mariah Carey.

And alternative is the new mainstream.

You love to say this when something like Death Cab debuts at #4, but a week from now when it falls to #70, and the 5 months that follows in which there are no "indie" records in the top 10, what then?

Happily enough, the iconoclasts can rest assured - alt-country will never be mainstream.

Then Bright Eyes will put out two more albums and prove me right again. Or maybe Smashing Punkins.

Yes, I'm pretty sure a defunct band that wasn't indie for the last 9 years of their career will soon prove your point. I await your comeuppance.

Bright Eyes proves my point - if anything. His albums debuted at, what, 8 and 14? Then fell off the charts immediately. Then, it was 7 months until another indie record broke the top 10. Totally mainstream!
