Blowoff - what's it like?
« on: April 21, 2005, 12:18:00 pm »
Thinking of going to Blowoff on Saturday but unsure what the sound will be like.  I'm happiest at nights like Liberation Dance Party and (sometimes) Mousetrap.  Is it definitely danceable?

Gay, very gay. So gay in fact that I'll be there.

Actually, it's dancey, lotta fun, and worth checking out. Plus Bob Mould and Rich Morel are going to play a bit of live stuff too. Definitely worth going to if you've never been there.

Beware of the bears though. Grrrr...

What is their live stuff like??

I went to a few of the early Blowoffs -- one at Velvet Lounge with about 15 people and one of the first few at 9:30 Club downstairs.  Hadn't gotten in to the crowded, shirts off dancing scene yet.

Upstairs it should be awesome...more mixed, more dancy....

Their music was very well described as House with rock guitars.  They sing, play guitar, and have backing tracks (at least they did that in the fall when they played).  He gets those Husker sounds from his guitars still.

And for all you Husker Du and Bob Mould/Sugar fans, Bob is headed out on tour this autumn with Brendan Canty on drums and a bass player. Bob has said that he will in fact be playing Husker Du stuff (as well as songs from his whole career). This is the first actual tour where he is dusting off some older material to play with full band (if you don't count when he played "Makes No Sense At All" on the Workbook tour in 1989). It will be incredible for sure.

bunnyman, that is fantastic news.  I almost asked if anyone thought his guitar rock days were behind him.  I know he's working on all different kinds of music now, but it seems from the outside as if he's headed more and more toward the electronic/new.

I can't wait -- he was my hero.

Agreed - that's great news.  The 3 songs at WedRock were such a tease.  I can't wait to see him fronting a band again.

I agree bags...my hero as well. I've heard some of the new record, it's really great stuff. Reminds me a lot of Copper Blue but with his solo stuff thrown in. Few guitarists really know how to shred like Bob, he's a total natural. I am going to definitely see his tour a few times this autumn...it's going to be worth it. Brendan is such a great drummer too.

It's like Morrissey cut off his penis once and for all, and that little penis flap sprouted a whole new Morrissey, one which was raised in Mexico City by a family of salsa dancers who ate a lot of meat.

It's like Bob Mould deejaying a Bar Mitzvah at some jazz club in Downtown Hell.
