When I went to see The Raconteurs, I wasn't expecting a mosh pit or even a crazy crowd.  When I was waiting in line and I saw older crowd rather than bunch of teenagers, I was happy.  Their music is not the type of music that you can go nuts for.  Its more of a theatre show, where you see Jack White do solos and be amazed by his talent.  I thought it was too loud and the sound was distorted - for me - since I was at the front the whole time.  The Black Lips were amazing.  The guitarist with the gold teeth wearing all white was just hilarious.  The were good as well.  As much as I love the bands that come to the 9:30 club, I hate the stupid staff.

The bouncers and staff are dicks, but dealing with drunk asshole and just people who ask the same shit night in and night out will do that to you. I understand why they're a bit "get out of my face" and I dont really care, I go for the show not the staff.

The bartender with the blonde hair on the merch side makes CRAZY strong drinks, shes alright in my book.

It's not a matter of being a dick and not being a dick, eventually you get to realize that people just want whatever they can get away with, so you adopt a cool demeanor not unlike being aloof. It has nothing with being a dick. If a guard shows favouritism to one person, it opens the floodgates.

It's pretty easy if you're a concertgoer. Look at the guard, look at the amount of people in the room, and think how many shows this guard sees every year. Then go "Wow. I'm really not special."

Being a dick is what I used to do during Ozzfest when my boss would stick me in the lawn in the rain with a radio, a mag lite, and a nightstick.    :D   Speak softly and carry a big stick (and know how to use it).

in closing, unless you've done security, you have no idea the bullshit they go through, and I for one adore the 9:30 b/c they don't put up with juvenile bullshit. Of course, I also don't try to sneak backstage, I don't try to hump anything that I didn't bring with me   :p  and I'm actually *gasp* respectful and don't get totally wasted.. unless someone is driving home.

but for the record I've been hung over 4 times in my adult life and 2 of them are from 9:30 Club shows.

again, i'll disagree.  i've never been treated wrong at the 930, staff has always been pleasant and i haven't witnessed them do anything other than their job, professionally.

they do enforce rules, firmly, so maybe complainers have issue with the rules and not the staff?  maybe it's a case of getting what you dish out?  or maybe i'm an incurable fanboy of the club.

Can't remember what show it was now, but there was a guy who was super rowdy -- dancing in a clinically questionable manner.  He started to bang around into the people around him (like me), and staff swooped in and took him out so quickly I was amazed.  Note, this was not a mosh pit, near a most pit, or even an area in the crowd that was particularly energetic & rowdy.  I was very grateful...

I've been going to 9:30 for 18 years, never had a problem with staff.  Granted, I don't try to get away with stuff I'm not supposed to.  Some may be pretty aloof, but I imagine that's a necessity amidst the nightly chaos.  When you have a problem, though, they are there to assist professionally and quickly.  And that's what you really need at a place like 9:30.

I have never understood how people can complain about the 930 staff.  The best I can surmise is that they don't get out a lot.  There are probably only a few people on this board who remember the Bayou.  Now that was a club with a stereotypically dickhead staff.  Mostly jarheads who were looking for an excuse to get in a fight.

The 930 staff may be a little aloof, but they aren't there to see the show; they are on the clock.  By and large they have far less "I work at a nightclub and I'm too cool" attitude than most other places I have been.  I am not exactly Mr. Extrovert, but the 930 staph who I have engaged in conversation (really just ThatGuy and the cute bartender with the star tattoo on her bicep) have shown themselves to be good people.

I am sure that some people will write off my opinion as ass-kissing, and that's fine. But I don't know how many hundreds of shows I have seen at the 930 club - both old and new - and I have never had any issues with the staff, even when I have been shitfaced and obnoxious.

Ugh.  I always hated the Bayou.  Everything from the pain-in-the-ass staff to dealing with Georgetown in general.  I wasn't sad at all to see that place go.
