Rant about the railing at the club
« on: September 18, 2006, 02:28:00 pm »
What the fuck is up with people sitting on the to the left and right of the balcony and then getting upset when you stand in front of them at a sold out show. Now I would difer the railing spot to the person sitting if they got up and said, we would like that spot, when you walked up and they then stood there and claimed it. But no, people want to sit and say, "you are standing in our way" when you go and stand at the railing. I nicely say to them, "look, this is a sold out show and in a half an hour this place is going to be packed, if you want to claim the railing, claim it now and we will stand behind you, but please either stand or sit, and if you sit, don't get mad if I stand in front of you." These bitches had the nerve to say, you are bullying us, we got here at 7:30 we've been standing all day." We want the railing when Zero seven goes on. They said this while the opener was on. They wanted us to stand out of their way while the opener was on then take the railing when the headliner came on. I said, this is a sold out show, please claim the spot you want and stand or sit and they continuted to give me additude. And the place got packed forcing them to stand up.

So the moral of this story is if you want to get there early to claim a spot claim it, but if you sit down don't get mad if people stand in front of you.

I am totally with you on this. It especially pisses me off when it's a sold-out rocking show. They want to claim that big of an area? Bullshit. Sit on one of the stools in the upper bar area if you have to sit.

if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, find the nearest door staph member, who will gladly explain the standing room only policy at the club to the space hogs.  when we notice a lot of people sitting, we often go around and tell them that they will have to stand, but if that didn't work we're happy to go into individual situations.

and no, you are not the only person to trip over the barricade step.  there really is no need to run inside the club, though.  take it slow, and you won't get hurt.

I usually just walk up to those folks, stand in front of them for a little while and then drop ass.  While I'm not a vegetarian, my slight frame can clear out rooms the size of a classroom.

Oh and always smile, claim your work and be proud.  You've earned it.

I always forget that there is little step up.  That half inch elevation has almost killed me.

My favorite place to stand for a show is along the railing at stage right corner, unless the show is not too crowded.  I hate when people try to squeeze their way up to the railing when there is obviously not enough space.

Hey, anyone know how much force that railing can take? I always wondered if hundreds of people at a sold-out show were pushing forward, would we all tumble into the crowd below? Is the railing rooted into the core of the earth or something?

I was at a show where the front guard railing broke.  I think it was at the 9:30 club.  Maybe the last time RATM played the club.  I remember Zack comming out and saying they wouldn't be able to play the show if people didn't chill out and take giant steps backwards. Couldn't tell ya how much force it took, but i can tell you could smell what everyone around you was wearing or not wearing.

That was the Patriot Center show in summer of '96, the crowd broke it after the Jesus Lizard played and before Rage went on, they even kept the house lights on for the first 5-6 songs in case some shit went down haha

Thanks for reminding me which venue it was.  I saw them in a bunch of venues, just couldn't remember where and which show it was.  I mean it was 10 years ago.
