old town theater
« on: September 20, 2005, 09:48:00 am »
anyone have any info on this venue pls share it.

i see alot of grey hairs going here.

i cringe at the gentrification that has occurred over the years and continues to occur in the metro area [i.e. bayou gone].

alx and other areas used to be cool. how many antiques does one need or shops to buy them in anyway?!

it sure would be neat for lack of better word  if this venue could be subverted by a crowd like that that goes to 930.

if their dollars were infused would it cater to such a crowd?

or is this place without hope?

I played the Old Town Theater once; it is an interesting venue.  Big room, they serve beer, and actually have really good sound.  The question is just if they can book the talent and get people out there.  I'd say go if there is something there you want to see.  But keep in mind - big room = lots of potential to feel like a big empty room.

what does it have to do with gentrification and who cares where old folks get their entertainment.

MMMMMMMMMMMMM its one more encroachment by rich ol whiteys on another neighborhood. who strip it and put up bland often corporate shops devoid of soul. and besides they take enuf from other people and thats often how they got rich and they get more then their fair share, why not let them restore these places - then take it from them.

personally i think it's a good thing when people continue to use old theaters instead of tearing them down for offices or chain stores. the number of rotting movie houses in detroit alone is a sad thing. perservation be damned when it's easier to convert a theatre into a parking structure.

MMMMMMMMMMMM id rather it be parking than some damned watered down innocuous yup-fest with no significance. its not about the structure its about what goes on in it thats more important to me. but im a function over form kind of a guy. the yups are all about what 'looks good or pretty' - being acceptable - dont rock the boat - cover it up and make it look good : devoid of real honesty. I've found that to be the case in all of DC.

In a very related concept, may I remind you of all of the snobbery between those who live in the District vs. those in the suburbs? Same story, just a different chapter.

I wouldn't go that far, but even the local council in Old Town make it obvious they don't want 'outsiders' coming in, even though the local economy relies on it.

Remember the large Irish bar down there....Ireland's Own I think it was called, but may be wrong. I didn't go because the owner was a large supporter of NORAID aka IRA. Anyway, they wanted to move to a larger property and was turned down because...quote "we don't want that type in our neighbourhood" unquote. "That type", just what do they mean by "that type"? Imagine the outrage if they had applied to open a reggae or hip-hop club and made the same statement!!!!

Also, try finding a parking space that legally allows enough time to actually have dinner down there? And God forbid you park over the limit by 5-10 mins...it seems the local mickey mouse cops stand in doorways waiting for the meters to click over then jump out to nail you.

the book "suburban nation" that i'm always pimping on here has a whole chapter about the design of alexandria and how it's basically held up as an ideal in modern urban planning, it's really fascinating ...

I think it's this:

 September 18, 2005

Muncie residents unhappy about swingers' club

 Associated Press

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Residents of a southwest Muncie neighborhood thought the 110-year-old former school with purple doors had been vacant these past 14 months.

So neighbors were surprised to find out the building -- which was last used as a bingo hall -- is home to one of Indiana's seven swingers clubs.

"I thought it was empty, to tell you the truth," Mary Neal, who rents a house across from the club, told The Star Press. "That shocks me. I'm just floored. There are a lot of kids that walk around here."

Swinging involves having social and sexual intercourse with someone other than a spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend. It primarily involves couples.

Local religious leaders are vowing to shut down the 7,3000-square-foot Klub Layden, saying it could bring crime into the community. And neighbors and city officials are debating whether the residential area is the proper location for a private club.

Marta Moody, director of the city-county plan commission, said Klub Layden could violate zoning rules for adult entertainment, but officials aren't sure whether the facility is operating as an adult business or a private club.
City laws require adult businesses to be at least 500 feet from residential areas.

Muncie City Council member Mary Jo Barton was unaware of the club's existence until recently.
"I can't say they're causing problems," she said, adding she does not want the establishment to stay.

A woman who identified herself as a manager, but refused to give her name, told The Associated Press that the club and its members were discreet and had received no complaints from neighbors.

The club is open two days a week and has pool tables, a dance floor, a six-person hot tub, a multiple-person shower and "sensually designed theme rooms," according to its Web site.

Klub Layden is open Friday and Saturday nights, and advises its members to bring their own alcohol and contraception. The club provides sheets, bathrobes and locker rooms.

An annual membership costs $25 for couples and single men and $20 for single women.

Members must agree to not identify others or their experiences at the club, without permission.

Muncie Building Commission Jerry Friend cited the facility for minor code violations of exit lights and a bathroom that was out of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Friend said the building has changed in the past 20 years since he played in basketball leagues inside.

"There's a lot of mattresses," he said.
But not all neighbors said they were troubled by the club.

"I haven't heard anything from them over there," said Norma Brown, a resident who has lived nearby for five years.

Klub Layden first opened in 2001 in the second-floor ballroom of the White River Plaza in Muncie, but moved in 2004 after its three-year lease expired.

According to the California-based Lifestyles Organization, the parent company of the NASCA International Swing Association, about 500 such clubs are operating in the U.S.

"I think humans in general really aren't monogamous," said Gary Booth, a Lifestyles spokesman. "They force themselves to be."

Indiana's other swing clubs are in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Valparaiso and in northwest Indiana near Chicago.
