If you can't beat them........
« on: April 23, 2004, 09:54:00 am »
......change the rules! What's next? Making Man Utd, Arseholes and Chelski play games with only 8 men on the field??

 FIA plans F1 revolution

Max Mosley, president of motorsport's governing body, is planning a major shake-up of Formula One.
FIA president Mosley is proposing to introduce a number of radical changes in 2008 in a desperate bid to make the sport more competitive.

His proposals include fitting cars with smaller engines and banning power steering and automatic gearboxes.

The changes would also bring the cost of running a team down, allowing more teams to enter the championship.

F1 has faced increasing criticism that technological advances have turned races into processions, with too few cars on the grid having a realistic chance of winning.

The dominance of Ferrari and Michael Schumacher in recent years has also led to the sport losing popularity.

In a letter to team bosses, Mosley said the changes would "improve the racing spectacle without introducing artificial rules" and "put a greater emphasis on driver skills".

 Among the proposals are:

2.4 litre V8 engines which must last two races (currently, 3 litre V10 engines to last race weekend)

A return to manual gearboxes and a ban on traction control and power steering

No tyre changes during race and one tyre supplier only

12 teams on grid (currently 10)

No spare cars allowed during race weekend
The proposals have been sent to all 10 F1 team principals and will be discussed at a two-day conference in Monaco on 4 and 5 May.

It's just the same bullshit as when they disqualified Audi Quattro from the pro-rallye series, because the car had quote"an unfair advantage"unquote...even though Subaru uses the exact same all wheel drive system.

I have a whacky idea....why don't the other F1 teams make cars as good as Ferrari so they can compete???  ;)

Oh hum......

The formula is clearly not working. In the last fifty years, there have been on average, two new teams try and get going every year. In the last 6 years the only new team has been toyota. They need more teams (imagine if there is a slump and 2 car manufacturers go bust, or merge) and the only way they are going to do that is by making it cheaper.

I regard almost all the rules as positive, except, the standard ECU and reducing the hardnes of parts used. But whilst they were at it they should have switched to larger slicks, which would increase drag and remove the reliance on downforce...

DO you want me to cut and paste the details from AtlasF1.com?

They can do what they want, they can force Ferrari to build a three wheeled car and they'd still win the championship with the design/engineering team they have.

It's a team sport....design/engineering, drivers and pit crew. Schumie is just one piece of a very skilful team.

Get yer head out of yer arse, the changes are for the 2008 season. Michael will be gone as will the design team leaders.

F1 is cyclical no team remains dominant forever.

There is no point Ferrari keep winning if they are the only team left. A f1 grid should be 24 (although I liked 26) cars.

Do you want me to post the details of the chnages from atlas?

Open your eyes...did I mention Schumie in that comment? I said it's the design/engineering team who make Ferrari dominant. They have the talent to build the best car regardless of the parameters.

 That's all I was saying.

I know, lets make it like NASCAR so they all drive the same fucking car and go round and round in big circles.

Barrichello isnt doing nearly as well as Schumi. Byrne, Brawn and Todt will all leave before 2008.

Ummmmmm ho.

None of this gets over the point that the sport needs to cut costs so that smaller teams can jump up from F3000, and that it wont scare off the car manufacturers. Maybe it will even encourage VW to join.

But it would only take one more team to leave for the sport to become untennable, well unless you want to see 20 Ferraris line up. I guess that way the team orders would be a real bitch.

The only proposed rule I really have a problem with is this one,

"A return to manual gearboxes and a ban on traction control and power steering "

 Why limit technology like that?

Power steering is important to ban....... In there you could hide the ability to hide a car automatically steered by computer.....

In the same way a direct manul gearbox puts the driver in further control of his car and makes it slightly harder to cheat, using traction control.

But in the old days shifting skill was the mark of a good driver. Mansell was famed for never missing a shift. Slightly mis-timed shifts open up the possiblity of overtaking. Which would be nice.
