Raveonettes/Autolux
« on: May 26, 2005, 04:49:00 pm »
I remember some folks here giving the Raveonettes a thumbs down, but I'm excited about this show.  I've heard good things their live act and I liked Autolux when they opened for Secret Machines a while back.  What's the word?

When I saw this show posted, I thought that I would wait until showday to determine whether I'd be able to go. Now it's showday and everything looks good, so I'm planning on it. Should be a fun show.

It's as if El Debarge was administered a lethal injection by The Cocteau Twins because he drove a truck loaded with ELO's albums into Axel Rose's house.

Great show.  Good crowd, at least where I was.  A small group of diehards up front getting into it.  Minimal yapping over the songs.

I only caught the last song from the Peels, so not much to say there.  Autolux was good.  Either I have the minority opinion on the right sound mix, or the sound was off here and there.  Wasnâ??t a set killer though.  Lead singer has a nice penetrating voice.  Good backup vocals as well.  They are generally subdued song-wise, but they have a few rockers.  They are the kind of introverted group that rarely acknowledges the crowd and often lets one song blend into another, confusing the fans on when to clap.  I want to say that I enjoyed them more at the 9:30 club a few months ago when their sound could spread out a little, but that may be because I was just too close to the speakers.

Raveonettes were a jam.  If you like classic rock with a healthy dose of distortion, this is the group for you.  They really bring the 1-6-4-5 chord progression front and center, 1950s style â?? including a completely appropriate cover of My Boyfriendâ??s Back, which was excellent.  They played a lot of songs off of Pretty in Black, their new album, and they were very solid.  In fact, I thought they played the newer stuff better than the old songs.  They seem to have abandoned the over-the-top distortion they used on Chain Gang of Love, with good effect I think.  I donâ??t mind a little distortion here and there, but they can lay it on pretty thick.  Imagine if Brian Setzer had recreated the rockabilly sound and added a persistent techno drum beat in the back.  Interesting, perhaps, but is it really necessary?  Anyway, thatâ??s just me.

I was at the Black Cat show last night, and it was pretty good. I could not make out a single word the Peels vocalist was singing, but I wasn't there to see them anyway, so I didn't really mind that.

Autolux were much better than I expected, though I think their set was a little shorter than fans would have hoped; though it should be mentioned that a bunch of their songs are 5+ mins long. I was also a little miffed that they didn't play Angry Candy, which was my favorite song off Future Perfect. Nice distortion effects, and done a lot clearer than the Raveonettes.

I love the Raveonettes, so I thought the show was great. I was surprised at the number of people that were really into it. I was in the second row, and people around me were in full motion throughout the set. This girl next to me smacked her head against my shoulder so many times while dancing around, it's actually quite sore now. The set was satisfyingly long, beginning at about midnight and stretching till around 1.20 am, which is something to mention because most of their songs run under 3 minutes. They even managed to fit in a couple of B-sides (Rebel invasion and I wanna be taken). I'm a huge fan of Chain Gang of Love, (I reviewed it on Epinions, under the name aniym)  but I was quite disappointed by their new album. Though they did play a number of songs off the new  record, they were done very well indeed, turning even the slightly cheesy ones like My Boyfriend's back and Love in a Trashcan into fast, pounding and totally danceable numbers. They played my favorites from CGOL as well as ones from the EP Whip it On, ending the show with the WIP closer, Beat City, which sounded great, except for the noise freakout at the end, which sounded slightly muffled. the problem was probably with the 4 guitarists the band used, making the sound too dense to make out individual feedback streams for jesus and mary chain fans like me. But on the whole, it was an excellent show, and I recommend that you catch whichever of show of theirs you can.

I agree with the other reviews. The Peels were a fine opener but I can barely remember anything about them. Autolux were impressive, especially considering all that noise came from one guitar player. They would really benefit from having a second guitar up there, but it was definitely noisy enough. I could see some of the Rave's fans bumming a little bit during the longer noisy parts, but I thought it was sonic bliss.

The Raveonettes were very good. They were using pre-recording background tapes, which I always find very annoying (and not just the Ronnie Spector vocal during Ode to LA), but most of the time they had four guitars, including bass, going on-stage, and that always makes for a good wall of noise. I thought it was a great show, with the highlight being My Boyfriend's Back and That Great Love Sound.
