Hey gang!
Our monthly dj night celebrating the finest in DIY post-punk, left-field pop and off-kilter independent music, "We Fought the Big One," will be a cracking good time this Friday night. Seriously, it's going to be awesome. Here's what we've got planned:
John Foster, one of the most prolific and celebrated contributors to DC-based music and pop-culture site
www.brightestyoungthings.com will be with us. If you have yet to familiarize yourself with John's work, he's simply one of the best things about that site and a big reason why I decided to start contributing to it. Here's what his bio says for his weekly "Judging A Book By Its Cover" series of features:
"John Foster takes music packaging very seriously. He has deconstructed the design of the recording industry through his personal work and his books, Maximum Page Design (HOW), New Masters of Poster Design (Rockport) and the upcoming For Sale: Innovative Solutions in Packaging Design (HOW) ?? out in October! As well as a monograph of Sub Pop??s Art Director, Jeff Kleinsmith, slated for publication by the label in 2009."
John's work with BYT extends far beyond his seemingly unparalleled grasp of graphic design I'm happy to say. His knowledge, insight and passion for post-punk and independent music can be clearly seen in a number of other fantastic features (such as his "Lost Records" series where he's already examined overlooked recordings by the likes of Colin Newman, The Fall, The Boo Radleys etc.) and interviews with such artists as Lorelei and Colin Newman. John also writes and records his own music under the moniker Sad Crocodile. Btw, you can read a write-up of his music and listen to tracks here:
http://vinyldistrict.blogspot.com/2008/09/tvd-first-date-with-sad-crocodile.html Sadly, Brandon will be taking a sabbatical this month (he is gearing up for his wedding---let's hear it for the man!) but the good news is the venerable DJ Kaiser, aka Mark Williams, will be filling in for him. Mark's taste is impeccable and the man is always full of surprises---anytime he spins is a good reason to clear your schedule to hear him. I'm really looking forward to hearing what he and John will be spinning.
And as usual, the Marx Cafe's charming bartenders will be offering a tasty selection of libations to choose from---just save a few Chimays for the djs.
Hope you can join us!
Rick
