He is one of the most fascinating songwriters of the last 10 years. I enjoy Zwan's newest album, however, it is not for everyone -- just like the Smashing Pumpkins. However, like many public figures (like U2's Bono) Corgan is mysterious, spiritual, and controversial.

10/17/2003 -- I am listening to the CD now--it is just plain good listening. Corgan's voice and lyrics are just plain cool.

timbednar@e-church.com 11/21/2003 -- does joining the social/political circle of contemporary christian music indicate faith? conversely, does one of faith automatically join ranks with michael w. smith, steven curtish chapman, and other CCM "powerhouses"?
i'm not trying to start a fight here, but i think it's unfair to identify faith in a cosmic, eternal, and infinite Lord just by what "evangelicals" say salvation is. everyone's a sinner, but keep in mind, the prodigal son's last name was still "son", even when he was out messing with hookers and leading a largely immoral life. he didn't have to come back home for the Father to continue to love him and look for him.
as for "God is empty just like me", it sounds like someone struggling with faith. mr. corgan has obviously lived something of a rollercoaster life, even if you just take his lyrics as evidence of that.
i'm not saying he's a christian, but i'm not saying he's not, either. since we can't see his heart, we can't rule it out. but we can continue to pray.
once again, i hope i'm not stepping on toes here. i like your review. i just hesitate to equate christian culture (CCM and extra-biblical evangelical teaching, for example) with Christ and christianity.
thanks for your time, and thanks also for giving zwan a fair review. God bless and fight the good fight.

dtiller@mikrotec.com 5/15/2004 -- I think that there definatley has been a change between the Smashing pumpkins and Zwan, and it is very clear if we jst look at those lyrics.
In fact, Ive found the story about Billy to be so inspirational, that i am including him in my talk a Antioch...
Billy Followed his Mother Through Catholosism until the age of 8, where he began to rebel ( as most children do).
As youve all stated "Emptiness is lonliness etc" in comparison to "Jesus, Ive taken up my cross" is a big change, but does anyone know WHY he changed?
I have the answar to that, With thanks to his online journal on Billycorgan.com, he has stated that the entire reason the Album is called "mary Star of the Sea" was because he was standing outside that parish, and decided to have a word to Mary while he was there, just for the sake of it.
He prayed to mary, and asked her that if she could sway his opinion on life, etc, that he would name his next album after her.
Sure enough, we see the Zwan lyrics and know for sure what happened.
So there you have it...
Billy's gone and had himself a Spiritual Experience which has changed him to what he believes is for the better.
Good On him, and God Bless him.
