Anyone got a Hague Connection?
« on: September 30, 2005, 08:31:00 am »
This is a serious crime against humanity...

Limp Bizkit is going to cover The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" for thier upcoming "greatest" hits release.  Can anyone think of a more horrible thing?

 In fact there is...

According to Billboard, the Bizkit will "merge" the song with their version of Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home".

Why would approval be given to such a thing... Ashcroft maybe hard up for the cash the royalities would bring in, but Jagger/Richards certain aren't.

They don't need approval. Copyright law allows anyone to cover any song once the originator has published it himself/herself.

i've heard of instances where artists have denied the release of a cover version of their song... they are rare as Prince did it once.  i don't think one can be stopped from doing a cover in a live setting, but the actual release can be held up...

it's  also possible it's a courtesy thing as well to get the orginial artist approval...

Yes and no.  You'll need a Mechanical License for the song itself, a Master License if you wish to reprint the lyrics in the sleeve, and a seperate digital license if you are going to sell MP3's, AAC, WMA, etc.  These can be obtained from the artists licensing rep and are generally approved.  You pay a licensing fee and then split royalties 50/50.  If you don't get the license ahead of time (enter The Verve), you pay penalties and lose all rights to royalties from the songs.

If you change the song so much that it is no longer recognizable as the original artists work, then the original copyright holder can deny the cover (this is what Prince did), otherwise, yes, you can cover anybody with little option for the original copyright holder.

Limp Bizkit should have been locked up when they came out with their atrocious cover of "Behind Blue Eyes".

Seriously can't we get Bono on this or something...

Not only do they rip of two classic album covers but, Saves the Day doing "Sonic Reducer", Thrice doing "Seeing Red/Screaming at a Wall", and I can only imagine how much I'd puke on hearing Thursday do "Ever Fallen In Love"...

While I found the whole album disturbing, this song really touches a nerve. It would be worse if Honda wasn't using a CIV song in a commercial already.
