Roll call: Legendary Shack Shakers

Anybody going tonight? It's at Iota. Seems some of you lovers of rawkous music and out-there stage personas would eat these guys up.

thinking about it, I've seen 'em before and they raise holy hell. Can't get there until around 10 though. Anybody know anything about the opener I'll be missing, Shane Nicholson?

The opener guy is an Aussie who was produced by Kasey Chambers' brother. His website lists him as opening for Matt Pond PA tonight, but that is incorrect. One review I read of him said that he sounded like Neil Finn, and in listening to the samples, I wouldn't disagree.

My guess is that LSS will play around 10, or so I hope.

so Rhett, did y'all see the show? I went to the Cat first to see Tone and by the time I got to Iota about 11 the Shack Shakers were done. My friends said they played for less than 40 minutes and weren't very good, plus way too loud. What did you think?

I thought I saw you leaving as we were departing, but wasn't sure if it was you or not.

Musically, the show was nothing to write home about. I guess I like them most simply for their stage presence, which they have aplenty. It was way too loud, though it didn't give me any ringing as some shows do.

The guitarist was greeting people at the door as we were leaving, and saw me in my SCOTS (on Yep Roc) t-shirt and my wife in her Bloodshot tank top, and proceeded to give us a rather long lecture on how wonderful Yep Roc is, and how much Bloodshot sucks, and that they are moving from Bloodshot to Yep Roc.

Couldn't have been me, I got there about 11 and left about 1.
I really miss Joe Buck, he added a lot to the band and I don't think they've been the same since he left.  At least not when I've seen 'em.  But I was told that their drummer last night had only played 4 shows with them and didn't know all the songs yet, hence the really short set. Maybe next time around they'll have it together a little more.

Well we stayed until around 11 chatting with imrotten, so it might have been you...were you wearing glasses?

Yes, JB was sorely missed. The new guitarist was decent to watch, but he's no JB.

could've been me, I was wearing glasses and a black print skirt. Sorry I missed you guys. If you're planning on seeing the Derailers on 8/3 we can meet up for a cocktail.

Pretty sure we're skipping that one. As far as I know, the lead singer, Tony Villenueva, has left the band. And to me, he WAS the band. If that's not the case, might reconsider.

Next up for us is the Drive By Truckers in Richmond on the 24th. Rotten says he is going to both Richmond shows, and Grotty was considering coming down for it.

Well yeah, Tony's gone, but give Brian Hofeldt some credit, he's great too. And now Austin drummer-about-town Scott Matthews is in the band. They're still well worth seeing even without Tony.

I was not too thrilled with the short set time or the ear shattering sound levels myself. That being said I thought the band esp. Col. J.D. were very energetic for the tiny crowd that was present. They said this was the first time they played at IOTA and it was kinda of an "audition" to them getting a better slot say on a friday or saturday. Talked to them quite extensively after the show and found out some of the dirt on the Joe Buck "situation". This guy,and I've heard it from more than a few people is a massive tool and really hard to get along with. The Shakers camp seems to be getting an unjustly deserved rap as the "bad" guys in the breakup aftermath. Who knows? That being said they have a new cd out in the fall on Yeproc and will be back in the area again at IOTA.
