CD help
« on: July 31, 2005, 02:43:00 pm »
I need help finding a really kickass CD to run to.  Or simply a list of songs, although that might be a bit trickier.

Anyone who runs (or does fast routine workout stuff) should know what I'm talking about.  There are a bunch of songs I've run to for the past few years and they are getting old.  Some of the songs I don't even like musically but they are great to run to.

Also, has there been any great releases lately in general?  I haven't bought/downloaded a new disk for months it seems.  I listen absolutely anything under the friggin sun, as long as its somewhat original or well written.  I think I'm probably just getting old, but I do look around alot.

Thanks for any advice or sarcastic bs.

What kind of music are you looking for? (I'm not a runner.) I guess something that picks up the pace but gives you a break at times. At least, that's probably what I'd go for. But I tend to prefer to exercise my mind rather than my body. Also, I often like music at times that isn't the standard choice of many others. Sometimes it doesn't wear me out so fast. Even when dancing, I often dance to different beats, rhythms, etc, within the songs that most people select. Or sometimes I do a strange kind of body math that doubles up the tempo or halves it or something like that. Odd, I know but I kind of dance like some musicians play instruments because I love to feel the music rather than follow some standard dance routine designed to fit all songs. And no, it's not a twirly hippy dance.

I'm going to take a stab at this.

Based on the reactions of a lot of people I know and trying to pick something that both rocks and yet can get kind of cerebral, I'm suggesting ....

 Amusement Parks On Fire

 It's self-titled.

It rocks yet has dimension and some body to it. Not just balls out and nothing else in those pants, if you get my drift.

Not necessarily my favorite album of the year but I do like it a lot. If I had to limit to my favorites, you probably wouldn't be all that impressed unless your taste is very close to mine. You know how that goes.

Several friends of mine have seen them live and they all say they put on one Hell of a show.

Funny thing - I was digging around in the "what are you listening to now" thread after I posted this and saw this one.  Went to ITunes, checked it out, and purchased it at probably the same time you wrote your post.  Very early 90s-ish it seems.
I probably wont ever run to this, but it seems like a really nice pickup.  Runners dont want anything to slow down to at all.  Although, there are slow songs that have background beats that are speedy while the overall song is slow.  DJ Shadow has a song - the first song on "Printing Press" - its so slow and grinding but I'll never take that one out of the IPod.
It might be hard to define great running tracks unless you are an absolute retard who takes it way too seriously - the timing, stride, etc.
Thank you very much for Amusement Parks...

I like to lift weights to albums like Audioslave - their previous cd called "Audioslave".  Nothing motives me more than listening to Chris Cornell singing in my ear...

Like to run to Kasabian, the Hiss, or Secret Machines.

Flexibillity/stretching exercises to Tom Petty's Wildflowers, the Engineers, or Death Cab's Transatlanticism.

for upbeat, fun stuff that gets me jumping all over the place?

Le Tigre, Junior Senior, some Ted Leo stuff, Annie, the first Kings Of Leon, Razorlight, Ok Go, Hot Hot Heat, Blur...the list could go on forever.

I don't run unless I have to, but I'd imagine that The Go! Team's  Thunder, Lightning, Strike would make a good soundtrack

Yes, perfect to run to.  And I have.  Forget about timing yourself on stuff like this.  Running isnt a badass sport.  But this is very good when you want to (at least) feel like a badass.  Even if I wasn't a fan, I'd force myself to run to Black Flag from time to time. Coaches should take this record (or any Slayer record!  That works too.) and staple earphones onto the heads of high school kids to get them motivated.  It really works.

The entire Husker Du catalog works for me.

I don't listen to music when I run, but I think the latest Hot Hot Heat, or the Old 97's Too Far to Care would work.
