De La Hoya vs. Mayweather
« on: May 03, 2007, 06:56:00 pm »
any boxing dorks on this bboard?  predictions?

i probably only qualify under the "dork" portion of that moniker, but the fight this weekend has caught my interest.   Good analysis here on ESPN, but the writer wimps out and doesn't give an actual prediction.  lame.

i'm rooting for DLH (as is Hoya Paranoia, i'm sure    :)   ) but i fear that floyd might have the rage required to pull this one off.  i'm hoping that oscar lands a couple of solid ones and knocks that shit-eating grin off mayweather's face.  he's so hateable.

are there any bars/venues showing the fight?  (for a cover charge, of course).  i can't order it at home, so i need to head somewhere to watch it...

I've been a fight fan on and off for a long time...this is the first PPV fight I've been compelled to order in probably 3 years or so.

I've always liked Oscar, mostly because of his straight ahead style and I also really like the fact that he always fights the best guys available, and usually in thier prime too.  I don't know if he'll be able to pull this off though.  Floyd's got speed and skills and Oscar's best days are behind him.  I'd love to see it happen though.

I'm headed for Vegas on Saturday morning (not for the fight, just a coincidence).  I've heard a big fight weekend there is like nothing else.  Throw the Derby and Cinco de Mayo on top of that and it should be a pretty crazy time.  Probably too crazy.  I expect ultra-high minimums on all the tables and it being too crowded to actually go anywhere.  We'll probably end up catching it on closed circuit there.

Any advice on where to put my money?

without over-thinking it, i see floyd as too quick and too precise to lose this fight. i think de la hoya will be game and look competive through the early rounds, but by round 7 or 8 floyd starts clinically racking up points and deconstructing DLH and wins a decision.

but i also think Floyd's clinical/boring style provides an opportunity for Oscar to steal rounds with dramatic flurries (a la Leonard), especially if he can manage to control the tempo until the end of rounds.  he could also catch floyd with a flurry and hurt him . . . if floyd slips up.  We really don't know how Floyd would deal with serious adversity, having never been tested.

Floyd's a 2-1 favorite.  No one will question betting on him.  I'd end up betting not too much on whoever I wanted to root for.
