Suggestions for Chicago
« on: October 13, 2005, 12:48:00 pm »
Hey everyone,

I'm trying to plan a trip to see some old friends in Chicago.  But being that they don't know anything that's going on in their city I figured I would poll the fora for any good places to go there to catch some good live music, and anything else for that matter.  Any suggestions?

check pollstar for concerts.  as for food. . .gotta have a chicago dawg (or italian beef sandwich) and chicago-style pizza.  for sightseeing, the architecture tour's are fantastic, and grab a drink at the top of the hancock building.

Chicago has a lot of music venues. The Metro and House of Blues are 9:30 comparable, size and booking. There's also Rivera Theartre, Park West, and others. The Double Door is a smaller venue. There's also Schuba's, the Empty Bottle, Abby Pub, etc. Check out www.pollstar.com and do a city search. There are a lot of blues and jazz clubs in the city. When you get there pick up a Reader newspaper. It their version of the City Paper.
There are restaurants all over the place. The place I went to only last visit was pretty nice. It's called Iggy's. It's a late nite bar/restaurant on North Ave near Milwaukee. I believe that neighborhood is Wicker Park. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in that area.

Pollstar is usually very incomplete when it comes to concert listings. I'm sure the Chicago Reader online would be a better option.

Venues to check out (as a former Chicagoan):

The Metro is legendary in the city.  Its where the more prominent Chicago bands of late have come up (Smashing Pumpkins, Alkaline Trio).  If there is a good show there while you're in town, it is hard to beat.

The House of Blues is like any other.  Worth missing unless there is a great show.

The bigger theaters are hit or miss dependent on schedule.  The Vic, the Aragon, the Chicago Theater, and a few others fall into this category.  They're good venues, but again, don't have a regular schedule that is all that great.  Best bet would be to check out what they have coming up - of these, I recommend the Aragon the most.  Its a cool space with good sound.  The Vic is horribly ventilated, but a neat stage.  The Chicago Theater is gorgeous and a landmark - but very few great concerts come through.

As far as small venues go, the best and most unique is the Fireside Bowl.  But somebody mentioned to me lately that they had closed it down.  Definitely worth looking into - its a bowling alley by day, and a rock venue at night.  Its old, its dirty, and its absolutely wonderful.

The Abbey Pub, Schubas, the Double Door, the Elbo Room, and the Empty Bottle all fall into the smaller, more eclectic categories for music.  The Abbey Pub has live music on most nights, and a pretty wide range.  Schubas is the same way.  The Double Door was almost closed down this year, but was saved due to citizen campaigning for it, so its a pretty beloved establishment among locals.  The Elbo also has a full schedule.  The Empty Bottle is very eclectic; lots of experimental, jazz, rock, and electronic stuff.

There are some other arena size venues - UIC Pavillion, Allstate Arena, United Center - but don't bother with those unless there is something huge going on.

Hope this helps!  And enjoy - I'm jealous.  Hit me up if you're looking for any other Chicago suggestions.

Thanks for all the suggestions.   It looks like I might be going there next weekend.  So I'll have to do some research for next weekend and see where I want to go.  Thanks again for all the suggestions.

If your looking for good late night drunk food, there is nothing better than the Weiner Circle. True Chicago hot dogs.

Susie's on Montrose, just off of Elston...open really late, great fries, even better Italian beef. Get it with the giardiniera. YUM...well worth the trip after a night out. Be sure to get a Chicago-style hot dog too, with the mustard, onion, relish, etc. Great stuff.

Favorite things in Chicago: the Art Institute, concerts at the Metro, Reckless Records, Ravinia (in the summer only), Delilah's (punk rock bar), Diversey Rock'n'Bowl, Smoke Daddy for BBQ, Vivo or A Tavola for Italian, Sushi Wabi...jeez, the list goes on and on. Just keep warm!

Yes, I'd also recommend Smoke Daddy on Division, just west of Ashland, I think. Great BBQ (from my meat-eating days) and sweet potato fries. They have no-name live music there, too and they are open late.

Pacific Cafe on Damen just north of North is a great casual spot for sushi and noodles, etc.

Cuernavaca on 26th street is good, authentic Mexican and will get you into the neighborhood of Pilsen...

Healthy Foods is mostly un-healthy Polish/Lithuanian food and will get you into Bridgeport (another not trendy neighborhood).

If you can get a cinnamon roll from any of the Ann Sather locations peppered around the North side, those are great, too...

As you can see, its all about the food...

Good architecture, too...the Monadnock at 53 W. Jackson is the last "skyscraper" supported by masonry (rather than steel with a glass curtain wall) and the Rookery at 209 S. LaSalle St. is worth checking out, too...

If you do not go to the Greek Islands on Halstead, it is not a trip to Chicago.

The popcorn there (Garretts) is super yummy.

My favorite bar there is the Gingerman.  It's right next to the metro.  The Map Room is also fun, but I couldn't tell you where it is.

Also, Penny's Noodle Corner is very good and really cheap.

For late fun, not show related, there's the Brew and View where they show movies, and you can drink beer and heckle the film.  It's a fun place with the right movie.

Oh yeah, a second thumbs up for Reckless.  I found a mint condition copy of Harvest there for 5 bucks.
