The Peelander-Z Zone
« on: July 18, 2003, 09:18:00 am »
Bunny Fan caught in onstage shocker!

All he was expecting was an evening of head bobbing to a favorite local band, but what he ended up doing will change his life forever.  Arriving at the Velvet Lounge, he said hi to Bunny who were due to closeout the evening's entertainment and got a drink from the bar.  When all of sudden three crazed costume wearing people emerged from the back area of the bar.  Beginning to wonder if someone hadn't slipped a mickey into his drink, our adventurer followed these strange and colorful beings upstairs. Where he was then treated to lunacy known as PEELANDER-Z!

Peelander-Z, who bill themselves as "Japanese Kung-fu Action Comic Punk", turned in an intense set with a mixture of crazed punk and performance art.  Besides employing props, signs, wigs and wrestling masks, the band fully engaged the entire audience into to their set.  First it was the suitcase of various percussion instruments they passed out to the audience to bang along with.  But the lunacy hit full steam when during the second to last song, Yellow Peelander-Z suddenly handed his guitar to an audience member.  This was followed by him holding up a sign that stated "Bassist Wanted"!  With a new bass player on stage, Red Peelander-Z held up a "Drummer Wanted" sign and a new drummer was put in place.

While the band of replacements played on, Blue Peelander-Z then joined the rest of the band in a little Peelander-Z bowling in the upstairs of the Velvet Lounge.  With Yellow becoming the reluctant human bowling ball.  Now this is where things become a little fuzzy, as the rest of the band took their places back on stage, Yellow tapped the shoulder of our hero who was honking away gleefully on a bike horn.  After a bit of a confusion on what Yellow wanted, our adventurer provided him a piggy back ride to the stage. Which was followed with him jumping on stage for a moment in the spotlight.

Needless to say our adventurer became an instant convert to the ways of Peelander-Z and will continue to the spread the word of his  favorite new action heroes.  More info on the "Japanese Noodle Samurai Punk Band" can be found at www.peelander-z.com. Be fore warn that he will be spreading the word of any future area appearances by Yellow, Red and Blue!

With the hazy became to wear off, our Bunny Fan was treated to a top-notch set by the band he came to see in the first place.  Always a fan of Ed Neenan sing and songwriting talents he has enjoyed being able see him supported by equally talented musicians.  If this was indeed Bunny's swan song, they went out on the top of their game and will be missed.

yeah they deserve more attention, especially since 5 people paid to see them.  i think they might have been able to pay their i-95 tolls with their door money.

sometimes i wish i was japanese.  then i could dress like a tard and have really gay accessories like a shoulder bag or something and wear flipflops AND have a super-cute girlfriend.  seriously.  caucasians can't rock style like that.

I would totally see them - they remind me of Les Georges Leningrad - although I'm sure that Peelander is a lot cooler.

I don't want to spoil the fun, but what is their music like?  ;)  Even if it's bad though, I'm sure that is no matter when it comes to crazy performances.

it's punkish in nature, the lyrics make the ramones look like shakespear... unfortnately the music falls a bit flat on their cd, it works better live with all the frantic goings on.  i do however like the cover of "detroit rock city"

a forum outing is in order the next time they go on tour which i overhear maybe in sept.

that is the good/bad thing with bands like that... they're so fabulous and exciting live that you want to listen to it like that all the time, but their cd falls short of the live expectations. that happened to me when i saw pretty girls make graves without hearing any of their material that had been recorded. granted, their cd isn't horrible compared to their live show, but it definitely lost a lot of the charm and energy.
