Original Devo Band Members???
« on: August 14, 2005, 10:21:00 am »
How many original band members were there for Saturday night's concert?  All, none, who?  I am thinking of going tonight (Sunday) and wonder if it's worth it, even though it is $55 per ticket.

I think it's 4 out of 5.  I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think most of them are there.  Maybe not from the '76 lineup, but at least from the early, more successful years.  It's not like it's Mark and a bunch of hired hands, if that's what you're worried about.

All but the drummer is an orginial member, and their drummer Josh Freese had been drummer for live dates for several years.  He having also played with the Vandals, A Perfect Circle, Guns n' Roses, Suicidal Tendencies, Perry Farrell, Paul Westerberg, Chris Cornell, Mike Ness, etc, etc, etc

Josh Freese is a wee bit of a better drummer than David Kendrick, but he's never appeared on any Devo albums.  Freese is also 20+ years younger than the rest of Devo.  Though neither are as interesting as Alan Myers was back in the earlier days.  Myers was a robo-drummer.   Alan has given up drumming and now works as an electrician, I hear.  At least that's what Kendrick has stated.  Kendrick drums on the 3 latter Devo albums.  Kendrick used to drum for Sparks & Gleaming Spires, BTW.  Devo's original drummer was one of the Mothersbaugh brothers, 'Jungle Jim" Mothersbaugh.  Jungle Jim was an electronic drum pioneer who designed and built his own drum kit.  You can hear some of his drumming on the 2 Hardcore albums.

FACTOID: the original Transformers TV show took their transforming sound effect from the Devo song AUTO MODOWN.

totally agree! Alan's drumming on those early albums was amazing... Josh Freesh is basically the go to drummer in LA these days.

Unlike the ABC and English Beat shows, which I think are both just frontmen with hired hands (ABC I'm pretty sure; all I know about the Beat is that Ranking Roger isn't there....somehow I think it's just Dave Wakeling, though)
