Mando Diao / Pop Levi
« on: May 18, 2007, 10:11:00 am »
Did anyone else catch this show last night?

Mando Diao were great - like a poor man's Hives.

But this Pop Levi guy and his band totally upstaged them.  He's like a freaky purveyor of glammy bluesy garage-y psych-pop.  I had never heard of him before.   I love when that happens.

hey ggw,
i was there last night and it was {takes a breath} awesome.  i can't sign on to pop levi, but mando diao were great and the films kicked ass too.  great crowd with great, positive energy.  and to top it all off, they were blasting sigur ros beforehand.  every time i'm there, i can't help but say out loud how much i love this place.

I agree it was a fun show.  I disagree about Pop Levi.  He grates on my nerves.  Bam bam bam and wah wah wah are not lyrics, especially if you don't have any actual words in the song.  At least his outfit was amusing.  I also found the crowd's energy to be great, but I thought they were really annoying - like who the f*ck moshes or crowd surfs to Mando friggin Diao???  This is not Tool or Deftones people.

I think Mando Diao are a great live band, but I'm still not swayed by their music.  I think it's a bit too derivative and their lyrics are lacking.     But they're fun to see.

You know, one of these days Pop Levi's gonna be dead, and you're gonna say, "Oh, I've been listening to him for years, and I think he's fabulous."

I saw a picture of that Pop Levi guy in the Express, and he looked like a chick with a beard. Is he a chick with a beard?

He/she is indeed.  His band is rounded out with a muscle man, a sword-swallower, a dwarf, and a four-horned goat.

I missed Pop Levi and The Films, but I liked Mando Diao's set. Catchy stuff with only a few of the slower songs, and kept the crowd dancing. I haven't seen crowd surfing at the Black Cat in ages. They were probably disappointed to be playing to a half-empty Black Cat, being big stars back home, but they didn't seem to show it.

Blue Honey by Pop Levi was in my fav songs of 2006 list, had never seen him and wanted to go last night but had already committed to DJing with Ladytron, whom coincidentally he has played bass for in the past.
