Cake and other bands at the 9:30
« on: July 27, 2003, 02:05:00 pm »
Cake will be playing with Cheap Trick, Charlie Louvin, The Detroit Cobras and The Hackensaw Boys.

Don't know any of these bands. Any suggestion? Should I skip the whole thing?

I'm going, I saw Cake last year in DC and they were good. This gives me a reason to see Cheap Trick.

Assuming you actually like Cake, the line up is stellar.  Detroit Cobras might be worth the price of admission alone, and of course Cheap Trick is, um, Cheap Trick.  One of the biggest American bands of the late '70s and early 80's, beloved by everyone from Steve Albini to our very own Bags.  You must have heard "I Want You To Want Me", right?  Anyway, should be lots of fun if you enjoy Cake.

P.S.  "Live at Budokan" is the last word in power pop.

Oh walkman, you couldn't be more spot on.  Oh yeah.  Good to hear the Detroit Cobras are not to be missed as well.  Have tickets in hand, as you might imagine.  I'm thinking cake should be, well, interesting.  Have *no* idea what to expect from them.

Charlie Louvin is a bluegrass legend, and Hackensaw Boys are an up and coming bluegrass band. If you like bluegrass, you'll probably like them both.

The other three acts are supposedly pretty good too, from what I hear.

Thanks all, this is where my musical knowledge proves to be pretty bad.

By the way, any good show in the next ten days at either Blackcat, 9:30 or IOTA?

Out Hud at the Black Cat on Tuesday.  I'm not sure if you'd like 'em...not much of a pop sensibility.  They're dubby, danceable instrumental funk-punk, featuring members of NY band !!!.  The sound is a little Gang of Four, a little PiL, a little Tortoise and a lot of bass.  Should be A+.

I'll add Tift Merritt at the Iota on August 14. Sort of like a  younger, more authentic, more country-ish Southern version of Sheryl Crow (I know that doesn't sound good, but she is). And she's quite a looker too.
