The music will be available eventually one way or the other. I have no doubt about that. So what do I care if they d/l the leaked version or the 'official' version? It's really a moot point if they have no intention to pay for it anyways.

Surely it rubs some people the wrong way when people d/l a leaked version of something. And it's fine if that's the way it is with you. But when you net it all out, I highly doubt that it will hurt any band.

remember that when the broken social scene hype was generated, their album was not available in the states. i had to have a friend in victoria, bc buy a cd at a show and send it to me. i didn't have dsl at the time, but they became hotshit through downloading. why stop now?

i don't want to get all chuck d on ya'll, but there are many reasons why an artist (especially an indie artist) would embrace the free viral trading of their music

Again I return to the original post that began this thread. Here's the truth as I see it: 1. xcanuck is clearly a fan of this band 2. he posted a thread telling people to go and download a "leaked" copy of their yet to be released album 3. in the same breath he let us know that the band is none too happy about the album being leaked.

So I ask myself as a fan of a certain band, if I was privy to such knowledge would I spread the word knowing that the band was not happy about the situation?

I guess my own personal rules of integrity would not permit me to go and spread that information. But hey that's just me, you guys clearly know what's best for this groups career.

Again, I'm not saying that this is a good thing or a bad thing. I'm just here to play devils advocate and ask how it is that you justify this in your own mind or if you really care at all? To tell the truth I don't care one way or the other.

I can see both sides of the argument: downloading definitely hurts the band (I only download pre-releases if I've pre-ordered the CD), but on the other hand, it's not as though with Pitchfork and other media agencies running stories that it's leaked that this person's post contributed, even in a small part, to the mass downloading of the album.

Who, honestly, downloaded the album and wouldn't have sans this thread?

I agree.

It's still something to think about though.

if there's ever a band that downloading put on the map, its bss. they would not be playing the 930 club if it wasn't for soulseek

sure pitchfork broke the band, but you couldn't buy the record in the states when the article came out. everyone got it through soulseek, which is/was mostly pitchfork nerds anyway
