Terry Reid
« on: August 24, 2005, 12:17:00 pm »
Read a blurb about this guy the other day and am intrigued.  Terry Reid was Jimmy Pages's first choice to be the singer of The New Yardbirds who eventually became Led Zepplin.  Reid couldn't do it because he was already signed to another label and recommended Robert Plant for the gig.  He is still probably kicking himself over that one.

A new reissue of his solo material from the time is about to come out in the US, and I was wondering if anyone has heard it or any his other releases.

i like terry reid and have his first three albums:

bang! bang! you're terry reid (1968)
 terry reid (1969)
 river (1973)

the first two are very similar and feature reid's fantastic vocals and guitar work. most of the material is dark '60s british blues-rock and would appeal to fans of early zeppelin, yardbirds, jeff beck, and early fleetwood mac (with peter green). the vocals are definitely strongly projected but the timbre of reid's voice is unique.

river is actually my favorite one and bears a similarity to tim buckley, as reid explored what his voice could do, and the songs veered away from blues rock into something more folky/jazzy and expansive. it is psychedelic but very subtle.

it's good to see the first two reissued, since all of his records are hard to find.

Does anyone think that Zeppelin would have been the band that they became with Reid at the vocals. Or maybe better? I think Plant's voice was unique. I don't know anything about Reid so that's why I'm asking.

zeppelin would still have been great because of page/jones/bonham. i'm not a plant hater, but plant is not a great songwriter; it's his voice that elevates him above his peers. terry reid is a superior songwriter than plant, and his voice is arguably just as good. so, IMHO, zep would've been different but still great.

Very odd. I was just thinking about Terry Reid the other day and thinking that I'd like to get ahold of his first release on a CD. Such an incredible album! Still holds up just as well over the years.

The later albums are Folkier and, in my opinion, a bit weaker, but still good if you like the more British Folk side of Reid without being full out Folk. But to be honest, I haven't heard the later ones so can't say anything about those.

 May Fly
 Rich Kid Blues
 Superlungs My Supergirl!

 LOVE this album!!!

In my opinion, Led Zepplin would have been far superior with Reid instead of Plant.
