His new CD is hugely disappointing - I'll be DJing the John Butler show tonight instead

I'll be there.  Any thoughts on the "Food for Thought" restaurant?  Other suggestions for supper?  (Paging "BENS CHILI BOWL"...)

Amen to that. Although I kind of knew it would suck.

What do you think of the new Josh Rouse cd?

I've only given it a few listens but it doesn't grab me the way Nashville did....my wife saw him at the Birchmere the other night and said he was very good...

The new album doesn't do much for me.

I skipped the live show. I heard it was just a three piece with no lead guitar or keyboards, so thought the sound would be thin. He was good on the Nashville tour.

I'd go to Bar Pilar if I were you.  Similar food to Cafe Saint Ex (though I've only had brunch at Pilar), but usually not as crowded.

I have a ticket, and although I missed Nicolai at SX and still wish to see him, I think I'm skipping. I saw Rhett in Tx..show and band are decent but not great (he brought out Susan Tedeschi, nice treat). The album could be so much better (vocals and recording/production)

I wasn't there, but that never stops me from reviewing shows.

He played a bunch of songs off of his really lame new album, and a handful more off of his first solo album. He and the band also did a number of Old 97's tunes, though it seemed a little awkward, like they were a cover band or something like that. He also did a handful of songs on his own, proving what a poor guitar player he is, but showcasing his model good looks.

I believe my wife is correct when she says he should hang up the music career and be a model.

the more I listen to the new cd, the lamer it becomes....

you mention rouse early...his, I really like. I know its no Nashville, but it still has a comfort music vibe thing going on. His show...I saw him monday in annapolis, and it was good, but the sound was thinner then last year, and matthew ryan's new band opening sounded much better.

again with rhett...its the second time he's played the area this year that I passed, and I dont regret it, lol

I thought this show was a significant improvement over the last Old 97s show I saw (I think between Instigator and Drag It Up?).

He played a LOT of songs. Very little banter. Whether because Rhett has no confidence in the new stuff, or he knew the audience didn't, there was no "new stuff" part of the set. It was just sprinkled throughout a pretty wide selection of Instigator and Old 97s material. The new songs are pretty weak; straight midtempo adult contemporary with more not-quite-clever lyrical turns than the disarmingly nerdy stuff from his last album. I do like Singular Girl, but I think that was an Old 97s b side or something.

Most everything sounded very good, though. The acoustic version of Timebomb was a little weak, due primarily to aforementioned guitar playing. Maybe I have a weak ear, but I feel like he has a Tej Leo-esque way of getting carried away on guitar so that you don't really know if he's still playing in time.

Probably the best parts were lack of Murray and retarded-looking lead guitarist from Old 97s. Current band is no improvement, though they are really good at making rock'n'roll faces. They must've trained under G.E. Smith. Oh, and Rhett's hair, which was fantastic.

Crowd seemed into it, a little too smiley and makeout-y. Surprising number of people left after the new single, which I'm not sure I've even heard. Is it getting radio play? Where?

At SXSW he didn't play any Old 97s and one or two off Instigator. Always sweaty though. Decent show...but I figured the same here, so I passed. I still dig him, but the album just doesn't do it for me. His hair is good in public, but he's one of those who is photogenic -- who knew he has a silver tooth? Heh.
